  • Tiny farmstead site 25km from the department capital of Moulins
  • Around 40 minutes' drive from Le PAL theme park and zoo
  • Continental breakfasts with freshly laid eggs from the farm chickens
Teeny, tiny and utterly fab... these are the flavours of smashing little farm site Le Petit Moulin, in the Allier department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. A mere handful of pitches are available here, but this friendly and kid-friendly farm comes with big ideas on guest facilities and leisure, as well as loads to do in the lush countryside surrounds. Pitches are spacious, grassy and surrounded by mature trees and grazing fields, in a green and peaceful region of hiking trails and swimming lakes a few minutes' drive from the village of Saint-Hilaire. Idle around or get active all day on site indoors or out in the open, at the above-ground outdoor pool, playground with swing, seesaw and trampoline (and loungers for the grownups), and cosy games room with table football, darts, shuffleboard, ping pong, board games and a TV and DVDs. You can dine on site too from morn to night almost every day, at the restaurant (open six days a week for three-course dinners). Continental breakfasts – with eggs courtesy of the farm's resident chickens – are served seven days a week either in the cosy dining room or on the terrace, depending on the weather. To up the ante somewhat, it's about 40 minutes' drive from here to the lively theme park and zoo of Le PAL, as well as to the paleontology park of Paléopolis where full-size dinosaurs lurk.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Everything about this site. Joint owned by a Dutch/French couple; Marc greeted us warmly, showed us around and we course choose our desired pitch. This is a real gem for couples, singles or families. The pool was delightfully warm, having been heated by the gorgeous warm weather and we placed an order before 7pm for fresh croissants and a baguette that we could collect from 8-9am- perfect! Such good value for money and if we ate in the area again we will most definitely re-visit and happily recommend it to anyone looking for a quaint, well kept rural establishment.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked This is a lovely quiet small site with large pitches which we loved, good clean toilets and showers and Mark and Vince made us more than welcome with an added bonus of an evening meal which was beautiful.

Peaceful, pretty, grassy site.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked We were the only people on the site, right at the end of the season. It was a quiet, grassy site, on a small farm. The access was good, and the loos and showers were nice and clean. As we were at the end of season (the very last day!), there was no food or drink for sale on the site, and the swimming pool was, of course, closed, but it did look like it would be a great place to stay with a family in the summer.

Disliked The lights in the shower block were controlled from the owners' house, obviously to save money being wasted. We quite agree that is a good idea, but not when you discover in the dark that the owner has forgotten to turn the lights on! He was very apologetic the next day, so we forgave him...

Would recommend as it has much to offer solos and families.

Local attractions

Medieval, historic, spa and scenic towns and villages are all around this region: it's about 20 minutes' drive to the hillside town of Souvigny, named as a Grand Site of the Auvergne, and half an hour to the ancient Roman and fortress town of Herrison with 14th-century Bourbon castle (regarding dukes, not drink). The local Allier village of Saint-Hilaire is just over a kilometre away. Department capital Moulins is 35 minutes' drive from the site, set on the Allier river. Its national monument 15th-century cathedral is a spectacular sight, but one of its most celebrated attractions is the Centre National du Costume de Scene/ National Centre of Costume and Scenography, which has thousands of costumes from stage and screen for wannabe actors and designers to admire. An hour away, visit the spa town of Vichy, made famed by Napoleon 3 when he waxed lyrical about the healing powers of its volcanic springwater.
