- Family site over two hectares, overlooking the Dordogne valley
- A 30-minute drive from Sarlat La Caneda and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
- Pools, playground, café, library, local wine and organised canoe trips
Family hols = sorted. Camping Domaine des Mathevies is an independently-run Dordogne site, 15 minutes’ drive from Sarlat La Caneda and a place where the owners have put a lot of time and effort into getting their place totally tiptop for travels en famille.
For starters (and of utmost importance) are the pitches themselves: spacious and serviced, with plenty of trees (oak, walnut and cherry, should you be interested…) scattered around to give a bit of shade to the two-hectare site. The toilet block’s open 24 hours a day, with free hot water, accessible facilities and useful family-friendly touches (baby changing, foot stools and a sizeable shower to wrangle mucky tiddlers without bashing elbows).
Next up are all the handy bits and bobs around the place: wifi, a launderette, a communal freezer and fridges to hire. Fresh bread and croissants are brought over every morning, and different food trucks park up every night through the summer; there’s also a cosy café in an old barn, and a splendid range of local wines (an essential part of the Dordogne experience) to accompany whatever eats you opt for.
In between eats, competitive sorts can set up for games of tennis, volleyball, badminton or table tennis, while those of a more laidback nature can laze by the pool with something from the site library. A paddling pool is also on hand for the smaller splashers, as is a fab playground with enough kit to keep kids happy for a good stretch of time.

From the manager...
Thank you for your return visit and also for the positive remarks and high scores you awarded Mathevies.
It is always rewarding to hear that we are getting most things right.
Just so you know, the complaints from other campers were not because they resented you having a good time with friends, but because the lighting setup from your van kept them awake all night.

It’s widely accepted that one of the finest ways to see the Dordogne area is to get out onto the river, and that’s easily done here for site staff can sort day trips of varying lengths, all including time for a picnic and a paddle. If you’d like to get around in a different way, hire bikes on site to pedal along a nearby traffic-free path (along an old railway line), pick up walking maps at the bar or head to the local stables (20 minutes’ drive) for horse riding and pony treks.
The scenery’s stunning around here, and so too are the châteaux – Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Beynac and Milandes are all about a half-hour drive away. At the other end of the living-quarters spectrum is the huge troglodyte cave complex at Roque St Christophe, 40 minutes away; gondola trips in the Gouffre de Padirac (an hour) are also worth going underground for.
If the kids are up for being cavemen, they can try it out at Prehisto Parc (35 minutes). Should they prefer 21st-century antics, aim for the ziplines of Squirrel Forest (10 minutes) or the rides and slides at Jacqou Parc (45 minutes).
