  • Family site surrounded by forest and crossed by the Céou river
  • Half an hour's drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda; near to gorgeous villages
  • Heated pool, hot tub, mini farm, canoe hire and summer kids' club
For many people, the key to a great family holiday is staying somewhere that’s got plenty for the kids to do while also being comfortable for the elders to relax in peace. If that’s you, Périgord Noir site Camping Le Douzou should fit the bill nicely. This family campsite is in a lovely countryside location between Bouzic and Saint-Martial-de-Nabirat, with lots of mature vegetation around the large pitches and the Céou river running through the property. A prime position within the site is the pool area, which has a heated main pool with a retractable roof to make sure that the waters are suitable for swimming in all weathers. Keeping with the ‘something for everyone’ vibe, there’s also a paddling pool for the toddlers and a wellness area with sauna and hot tub for the grownups – plus poolside sun loungers where parents can keep an eye on their offspring. More options for the kids? Plenty of those – the site has a playground, an outdoor games area (for football, volleyball and the like), a trampoline and a mini farm with chickens and dwarf goats. In the summer months, you can also throw activities like pool parties, campfires, art sessions and face painting into the mix. That’s the kids sorted… and what of the grownups? Well, you may like to play a game of pétanque, join a jogging outing or just grab a cool beer from the bar and chill out. For some food to go alongside, you’re welcome to bring a barbecue or take it easy and choose something from the snack bar (which opens in high season with a menu of pizzas and other light meals, plus pancakes and ice cream treats).

Local attractions

Tempted to see a little more of the river? Hire canoes on site and paddle off to see what you can spot along the river banks. For different watery views, head up to La Roque-Gageac (20 minutes’ drive) to board a gabarre trip along the Dordogne river. Both the Dordogne river and the wider area are well known for their pretty villages, of course – a few that are well worth visiting nearby include Domme (20 minutes), Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil (45 minutes) and the fabulous clifftop village Rocamadour (an hour), home to the cheese of the same name. While you’re over in Rocamadour you may like to stop in to meet the monkeys at La Forêt des Singes or continue on to Gouffre de Padirac (an hour and 10 minutes direct). Closer to home, Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (25 minutes) and Château des Milandes (35 minutes) are good places to get your historic-building fix, and Jardins de Marqueyssac (25 minutes) is full of lovely walks.
