Looking for some surfing action? You’ll certainly get that when you stay at Plaza Mango Verde at El Zonte, part of a swathe of sandy beaches that fringe Surf City, El Salvador’s recently crowned surfing capital.
This leafy compact site is an oasis of greenery among the modern developments in El Zonte, with a handful of simple earth pitches designed for small campervans all tucked away under the shade of coconut and mango trees. Being a couple of minutes’ drive off the main coastal road, it’s easy to get there, and even easier to reach gorgeous tropical beaches less than five minutes’ walk away, so don’t forget to pack that surf board if you want to catch some breaks.
If you need to do a shopping top up, Puerto de La Libertad (25 minutes’ drive) has well-stocked supermarkets, and there are plenty of beachside bars scattered along the coastline for cocktails and seafood suppers at sundown.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.- The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
- No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- Bookings must not be for more than 15 consecutive nights.
- Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
- A cable measuring at least 2 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.
- Units longer than 5 metres are not allowed.
- This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.
- Please note that the shower facilities are unisex.

Local attractions
El Zonte is one of El Salvador’s premier party towns; the main attraction is the world-class surfing, with the nearest four beaches – all typically tropical palm-backed expanses of sand – less than five minutes’ walk away from Plaza Mango Verde. Other breaks including El Sunzal, KM59 and KM61 are around 15 minutes’ drive.
But there’s plenty more going on in El Zonte; take yoga classes at sunrise, go sea fishing, skateboarding or exploring the dramatic sea caves and arches along the shoreline. If you’re visiting between September and November, you can watch baby turtles hatching at La Mision Hatchery (all these options are about five minutes’ walk away).
In contrast to the coast, the cooler climate in the highlands town of Comasagua (55 minutes) makes it a hub for hiking in dense forest, while there are far-reaching views over tree-clad peaks from Chiltiupán (20 minutes). Tamanique (35 minutes) is surrounded by mountain foothills, and the spectacular volcanoes of the Cordillera de Apaneca are roughly 90 minutes by car.
