  • On a 50-hectare estate in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest
  • A 35-minute drive from Zamora and the Podocarpus National Park
  • Walking trails, natural swimming pools and bar-restaurant
If someone told you that you could pitch up in the middle of the Ecuadorian Amazon, spending your days trekking through tropical rainforests and then coming home for swims in the crystalline waters of a couple of natural pools… well, that’d be a definite ‘sì’, would it not? Such a place exists indeed, in the form of SantPied, part of the Santa Gertrudis farm complex in the Amazonía region, 35 minutes’ drive north of Zamora town. From this prime position, get out for explores in the Podocarpus and Cordillera del Cóndor national parks, or tramp along the trails that run through the farm’s own 50 hectares or primary forest. Heading out or staying in – either way, the best way to finish the day is by leaping into one of the two pools on site, each one fed by a natural waterfall, and then settling in for dinner and drinks. If you’re self-catering that might involve lighting the flames of a campfire or barbecue; should you prefer to have someone else do the honours while you’re on hols, grab a table (or a hammock…) at the bar-restaurant.

Local attractions

Wildlife-seekers, rejoice – this unspoilt part of the world is teeming with life. Get out to see what you can spot by hailing a taxi from Zamora (35 minutes) to the Podocarpus National Park, where the mix of highland and lowland areas has resulted in some of the planet’s best animal and plant diversity. More intrepid types might like to head further north for treks in the mountainous Cordillera del Cóndor National Park (an hour and 15 minutes), where the peaks climb up to 2,900 metres and there are still many species of plants that have yet to be documented by scientists. Skip away from the rainforests for a day trip to Loja (an hour and 45 minutes), a colonial city with a well-preserved centre. Head here for visits to the cathedral, the city gate and central park or take walks around the botanical gardens or along the banks of the Río Malacatos.
