As you’re right among one of Denmark’s topping seaside towns, you’re within easy reach of an award-winning beach with white sand dunes, all lined photogenically with little Danish beach huts and several historic World War II bunkers along its stretch of sand. Around 15 minutes’ drive away – or a 40-minute pedal if your spritely self is feeling the urge for scenic seaside bike ride – is Saltum strand, a wide and sandy beach in Denmark Bay that’s backed by dunes and forest and merges with the award-winning Blokhus beach. Around Saltum is a hilly area known as the Jammerbugt Alps, around which you’ll be able to take a lovely woodland hike along any of the many tracks that network the slopes there. If you’re into wildlife watching, head between Saltum and Grønhøj to the Lille Norge nature reserve: should you keep your peepers firmly peeled, you’ll be able to spot wild critters around the forestland and countryside here, which runs right down to the North Sea coast and again makes for super splendid walking territory. For days out with kids (or for adrenaline addicts), head over to Fårup Sommerland, for days’ worth of amusement on the family attractions and white knuckle rides there; or, should something more educational/less scary be in order, take your curious self and littlies along to Northern Europe’s biggest aquarium, Nordsøen Oceanarium, to see the likes of sunfish and North Sea seals at feeding time.
