  • Coastal site in the grounds of a hostel, with sea views from pitches
  • A five-kilometre hike to the Trøllkonufingur rock formation
  • Indoor kitchen, living room and bathrooms all available
An island site with sea views from your own pitch... what a splendid Danish destination is this. Camping à Giljanesi is in the grounds of a hostel on the coast of the island of Vágar, one of the 18 isles in the Faroe archipelago (yes, the one that looks like a dog's head...). This is oft hailed as one of the most top spots in all the Faroe Islands for outdoor adventures: the island is famed for its hiking, boating, fishing, horse riding, and birdwatching galore around the north and west coasts, and history is all around too if that's your bag instead. It's a cinch to get to Camping à Giljanesi once on Vágar: the site is 10 minutes' drive from the airport and under an hour from the bus and ferry terminal in Tórshavn. And once arrived? Well. That famed hiking includes paths aplenty in the surrounds, with destinations including a lake, waterfall and the legendary rock formation of Trøllkonufingur or the witch's finger. For yet more island exploring, boat trips to Mykines, the most westerly of the Faroe Islands, leave from Sørvágar 10 minutes away – or you can whirl to Mykines in a helicopter instead... Pitches are provided with electricity and a supply of fresh Faroese drinking water, and there's free wifi access on site as well. Guests are also welcome to use the hostel facilities, including a kitchen, living room and bathrooms with showers. For food, a couple of grocery shops and a café and pizzeria are around a kilometre away.

Local attractions

Book a guide or set off by yourself on the many spectacular (and energetic) hikes around Vágar, like the strenuous old railway path over mountainous terrain to Gásadaldur and views of the Múlafossur waterfall, or the hike to Slættanes, Vágar's abandoned village. Care is needed when hiking on the island as it's illegal to stray off the path on most of them; if you'd prefer a guide, contact the hiking association of Vágar which has several routes to try. Less energetically, and to investigate the old sites of the island, stroll the kilometre or so to Sandavágur Church with its splendid red roof (a bit of a must for Faroe Island photography), and the two and a half kilometres to the war museum at Miðvágur which commemorates soldiers of World War II. The Sørvágur Village Museum, also two and a half kilometres away, has exhibits and displays on local industries as well as a fine collection of around 10,000 old photographs. By car, it's five minutes' drive to Lake Leitisvatn, the island's biggest, for boating and brown trout fishing, and just under 20 to the waters of Fjallavatn to Vágar's north west.
