  • Spacious site with access to Croatia’s biggest swimming pool resort
  • In Tuheljske Toplice village, 45 minutes' drive from Zagreb
  • Restaurants, bars; next door to a waterpark
Fancy a trip to Croatia’s largest swimming pool resort? How about staying right next door so you can wander in and out as much as you like? It can be splash time pretty much all the time at Kamp Vita Terme Tuhelj, a family-friendly Krapina-Zagorje site in the village of Tuheljske Toplice, with access to the Water Planet waterpark (for an extra charge). It’s worth taking a deep breath before even trying to list the facilities around the huge waterpark – there's a wave pool, a kids’ pool with mini waterslides and water cannons, a toddlers’ pool, a bubbling relaxation pool… On top of that (another deep breath) there are five more waterslides, a 250-metre-long lazy river with two lagoons and underwater massage areas, plus a cocktail bar for sips after submerging. Sample an aperitif here, then head off to the restaurants inside the complex and the adjoining hotels for dinner… or whip up your own on the barbecues back at Kamp Vita Terme Tuhelj. It’s set up to make it easy for you to sort eats, with a dishwashing area for cleaning up afterwards, and plenty of shaded spots in which to set up a picnic. Wrestle the troops away from the water with promises of time at the site’s playground, games of tennis or bike rides nearby, or kids’ activities around the complex (while the parents perhaps slope off for a spa afternoon?) If you can manage to get away for an entire day, it’s worth making the trip to Zagreb, 45 minutes’ drive away, for a wander.

Liked: The only positive points about this site are the shower and toilet areas are quite nice and the electric hookup is fine as well as there being water points on each pitch.

Disliked: What can I say?! We hated this campsite! The campsite calls itself a ‘luxury campsite’ however the site is directly next to the swimming area which is awful. The so called ‘lazy river’ is full of children swimming the wrong way up it so you can’t relax for a minute. There appears to be no organisation or rules so the whole thing is extremely stressful and horrible. The cocktail bar at the end only takes cash which is ridiculous in the middle of a swimming pool as where are you supposed to keep the cash! The campsite receptionist was very unhelpful giving us only one bracelet to get in and out of the park so we had to share and didn’t provide any information about the water park or actually the campsite itself. Our pitch was right next to the crazy golf pitch where there were screaming kids until gone 10pm and this started again at 6.45am and to top it off they then started mowing the lawn at 8.30am. There were also teens hanging around the bbq area until late and no barrier stopping pedestrians coming into the site which is an issue for security. Considering there only appeared to be 2 families staying on the campsite including us it is one of the least peaceful site me we have been to. The ‘Taverna’ was also closed despite the website saying it was open and all of the rubbish skips were overflowing. For the price this site is terrible and I wouldn’t return even if you paid me.

Local attractions

If you’re only able to manage one day out, it should surely be to Zagreb (45 minutes’ drive) – it’s stuffed with pretty places for a stroll, whether you favour baroque architecture, art deco glamour or gritty street art. Start by craning your neck up at the twin spires of the cathedral, then dive underground for a wander in the Gric Tunnel or rise up to the top of the Zagreb 360 viewing platform to see the city from above. Those travelling with kids might also like to plan outings to the interactive science exhibits at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, beastie-spotting at Zagreb Zoo or the weird sights at the Museum of Illusion. Parents of a certain age might also like to show the kids what life was like without the internet (gasp) at the Zagreb 80s Museum. Grab a couple more slots for outings though, if you can – there are lots of trails to hike or bike along in the local area, and pretty villages such as Kumrovec (15 minutes), preserved as a folk museum with around 40 reconstructed buildings and the chance to learn about traditional crafts.
