  • Tree-shaded site in the Campine region, a five-minute drive from Balen
  • Pakawi Park zoo and Fietsen door de Bomen cycle path 15 minutes’ drive
  • Playground and outdoor pool with slides, plus café and sports hall
The Campine region of north-eastern Belgium is a top destination for cyclists – or, indeed, for anyone keen to explore its wetlands and forests. Making the most of all that requires some accommodation, and slap bang in the middle of this area is Camping GT Keiheuvel. With spacious pitches, this site is popular with families thanks to the presence of a play area and an outdoor swimming pool with a slide (open during high season only). While the kids entertain themselves and make new friends, the grownups can relax poolside or, if they’re feeling particularly active, hit the on-site sports hall, with a gym and tennis courts. A 10-minute walk past Aeroclub Keiheuvel (where you can watch gliders take to the air), leads to a recreation park with an adventure playground, miniature golf and go-karts. Meanwhile, cyclists shouldn’t miss the Fietsen door de Bomen (15 minutes’ drive or half an hour by bike), a cycle path with stretches going through the tree canopy. This site scores highly in terms of leisure facilities, but what about amenities? Well, it’s top marks again, with showers and a toilet block (including facilities for the disabled), plus a washing-up area, launderette and recycling points. There’s also a café for when you start to feel hungry, or you can stock up on provisions (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away) and have a barbecue. There are also plenty of dining options in the town of Balen (five minutes).

Electric grass pitch (woodland)

Liked: Very good pitches with firm soil and very good drainage of water even under heavy rain. Generous sized pitches. Very peacefull and quiet. The residents are very friendly and welcoming.

Disliked: The toilet block in need of modernization although still functional. Toilet paper roll dispensers outside the toilet cubicles.

Electric grass pitch (woodland)

Liked: Loved peaceful, laid-back nature of the site. Great swimming pool open from 11am til 8pm when not raining. Easy check-in and check-out. Ample room on pitch and water/electricity on pitch. Super sports facilities at reception area. Toilet area basic but thoroughly cleaned daily.

Disliked: Rather odd that no toilet paper in cubicles - you need to take the toilet paper in with you and no hand wash at sinks - you need to take your own.

Playground electric grass pitch

Meadow electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The camp site is in a forest setting. The pool is fun for the children.

Disliked: No hand soap in the camping bathroom, increasing the risk of enteritis on your holiday. No dispensers either, so this seems an intentional decision. If everyone isn't given the option of using soap to wash there hands there is a greater risk of picking up something nasty in the bathroom, not something you want on your holiday, especially when preparing your own food while camping. Not having toilet paper in the cubicle but rather on the wall outside all the cubicles is a rare and unusual punishment for anyone visiting, and requires a keen judgement to get the balance right between being caught short or wasting loads of toilet paper. For those with an environmental conscious, a practice exists where spare toilet paper is piled on the dispenser, presumably placed there before handwashing. A touching idea that avoids waste, but perhaps not everything should be recycled. A key is needed to use the bathroom facilities, only one is provided and a €20 deposit is required incase you loose said key. If you absent mindedly leave your key in the bathroom, or if you have a small child with a sick sense of humour, you will have to hang around for a stranger to let you back in as there is no spare. The bathroom floor was permanently wet. Use a dry mop after cleaning!? The camp restaurant (Frituur), only accepts Belgian payment cards, so cash is very much required here if you are not Belgian, god forbid.

Liked: Very clean tidy and very welcoming. We will defo be going back

Disliked: Men were using the women’s toilets and showers. When there’s was locked .couldn’t understand it as we all have keys for the toilets. So it’s a bit awkward when you have young girls going in their toilet to see men in there.

Meadow electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location to get to from Calais and for days out - we went to Zilvermeer and Ghent on recommendations - both super days out. Large free recreation ground (Belgium takes play areas seriously) a short walk/cycle back up the road. Decent play area on site as well. Pool on site was perfect in the warm weather and lifeguard always on duty so felt safe to pop back to the tent or send my 10 year old ahead to start swimming without me. Laundrette on site is a decent washer and dryer which you book with reception. Toilet/shower block is basic - no soap as previously mentioned so clip a hand gel to your key! A very friendly site cat spent her time around the tent field and often went wandering into the wooded area with my daughter or sat with her in the sun on a blanket, which she loved.

Disliked: The toilet blocks and washing up areas are accessed by a key and the doors are quite heavy - took my daughter a few days to get the hang of it on her own. Cannot use your card at the pool bar (didn't use the main bar). There are lots of bugs as expected at a wooded site, so be prepared with spray and creams! There was a motocross event on for three days while we were there which was noisy from 7am til past 9 and it seemed like that area just up the road is used for events like this so check if you aren't fond of noise. Also, at the tent field, the electric and water points were not working. A single communal electric stand had been set up but water was a walk back to the toilet block. At this location you could also hear a local kennel or working dog place - an almost constant background noise of barking. The site is mainly set up for the residents of the caravans and bungalows but not really a problem once you get the hang of things.

Meadow electric grass tent pitch

Liked: de volledige accomodatie. zwembad, cafetaria, proper sanitair, gezellige kleinschalige familiecamping

Disliked: onthaal.

Local attractions

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my. These are just some of the residents at Pakawi Park (15 minutes’ drive), a forested zoo where you can also see cheetahs, capuchin monkeys and pink flamingoes. And when the kids get tired of the animals (as if…), they can take a break on the giant bouncy castle. Sahara Lommel (half an hour) is a nature reserve named after the large expanse of sand at its core. Unlike its African namesake, though, this area is surrounded by green forests and dotted with lakes. You can spot birds like grebes and ducks here, or climb the 30-m Uitkijktoren Lommelse Sahara tower for far-reaching views. Amusement rides await at Bobbejaanland (35 minutes), with something for every age group – from gentle boat trips along a lazy river to thrilling rollercoasters and water attractions – all spread between four themed areas, including a Cowboy Town.
