  • Dog-friendly site on a wine route in the southern Styria wine region
  • A 35-minute drive from Maribor; oil press demonstrations next door
  • Pygmy goats and miniature golf course; access hiking or biking trails
No doubt when you arrive at Claus Resch Camping you’ll waste no time making plans to get out on the southern Styria wine region’s hiking trails and wine routes – a big perk of this dog-friendly site is its location on a wine route in Leutschach, Leibniz. When you’re not sipping on local wines, entertain yourself on the site’s miniature golf course or seek out the seven pygmy goats who get up to mischief on the farm every day (they'll be as happy to see you as you are to see them). If you’re in the mood for adventure, there’s also access to a hiking trail and a bike path. Right next door is Kernölpresse Bernd Resch, an oil press where owner Claus’s brother presses Styrian pumpkin seed oil by hand several times per week. Guests are welcome to go and watch the process get under way. Very handily, Claus Resch Camping is within walking distance of a supermarket and a petrol station, making it easy to gather supplies or top up your vehicle to reach the nearby wine tasting tours. There are also plenty of wine taverns a short walk away from the site. The Slovenian border is 10 minutes’ drive from the site, and it’ll take you a little under three hours to reach Portorož and the sea. With views of hills, green fields and sloping woodlands, you may be tempted to spend some time just relaxing on the site too. Practical facilities include a shower, toilet, washing machine and rubbish disposal.

Local attractions

Gentle little waterfalls will accompany you on a hike around Heiligengeistklamm (25 minutes’ walk). Altenbachklamm gorge (15 minutes’ drive) is another gorgeous setting for intrepid hikers, along with vineyard views from Herzerlstraße (15 minutes) and the wooded slopes in the Pohorje mountains (40 minutes). While you’ll probably be keeping your eyes peeled for passing wildlife on your hikes, Bärenhof-Berghausen (25 minutes) will bring the animals to you. There are bears across this animal park and plenty of wine taverns in the local area for activities afterwards. Or perhaps you have a more history-themed day in mind. Circled by a forest and a park with exotic trees, Grad Viltuš (35 minutes) is a 19th-century manor with Romantic architecture. Another must for history aficionados is Maribor (35 minutes), a simply gorgeous city on the Drava river with an old town, castle and museum.
