  • Family-friendly site with easy access to Newgale Beach, Pembrokeshire
  • Haverfordwest 15 minutes’ drive; Tenby 50 minutes
  • On the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; bistro-bar on site
If you would like your Welsh holiday to be punctuated by spectacular sunsets over the sea, now might be the time to book a spot at Newgale Campsite. This family-run (and family-friendly) spot benefits from a privileged location on the western coast of Pembrokeshire. How do you fancy the idea of getting up in the morning, crossing the road, scrambling across a low bank of shingle and being faced by the spectacle of St Brides Bay? It shouldn’t take any more than… oh, about one minute on foot to reach Newgale Beach. The time you save by staying so close to the sea can be invested in your favourite water-based activities, whether wild swimming, surfing or canoeing. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes just by the site; follow it north to reach Porth Mynawyd (a one-hour walk), a remote tidal beach in a deep cove with shallow waters and rockpools, or south to Nolton Haven Beach (55 minutes’ walk). This is a popular spot for surfing, so you might want to drive instead and bring your board (it takes about 10 minutes by car). National Trust - Southwood Estate (five minutes’ drive) is a top place for spotting the local wildlife, from grazing ponies to nesting birds. The nearest pub is right on site: the bistro-bar, named The Landsker Line, dishes out local Pembrokeshire ales, soft drinks and coffee, as well as food like pasties, sausage rolls, loaded fries and ice cream. It's a splendid place to refuel and unwind, especially since it has sports TVs and live music from artists throughout the season. Amenities on site include a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests, a launderette and a communal freezer. On weekends in June and the school summer holidays, a catering van serves woodfired pizzas. There are also several restaurants within a five-minute drive of the site, plus plenty more in Haverfordwest (15 minutes).

What customers say

Great campsite, right by a beautiful beach. Staff are friendly, facilities are clean. Good atmosphere, spacious pitches, cafe/bar with music, pizza. Showers are basic & paid, but beach access is a big plus. Some noise.

Liked Such a perfect stay. We had a tent, motorhome and brought the dog. Great facilities, location, clean toilets and showers, friendly and helpful staff. All the other campers were respectful and although it was busy, it didn’t feel overcrowded or noisy :) love being right opposite the beach too. We did the Wild Water Sauna on the beach and grabbed a pizza from the on site van which were both lovely.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Staff were friendly, late check-in at 22:15 due to poor traffic was appreciated, beach-adjacent location is nice, walking distance to Sands Café which is fabulous for breakfasts.

Disliked Extremely crowded with tiny pitches (4x4 metres max it seemed) meant everyone was on-top of each other, no privacy, it felt like a festival, we had someone else's car park up so close it was touching our tent. Very loud at all times of day, lots of drunk adults and screaming kids running around the whole site. Toilet & Shower facilities are dated, dirty, and way too small / inadequate for the number of guests (there were queues for toilets and showers every day), they need a complete refurb and expansion.

We (along with the entire site I presume) got woken up at 1am one night by deafening noises coming from the adjacent beach car park which was being used for some sort of midnight drag race, with cars screeching and skidding and revving their engines for ages, unsure if police were called but seems like it might be a regular spot for illegal drag races / anti-social behaviour.

They advertise fire pit rental, but every night we were there we were told there were none available as 'they're like hot cakes during summer', okay, well maybe order more to make sure you have enough stock for the customers you're letting in if you know the current number can't meet that known demand if you're listing it on your site as a service you offer? This was one of the reasons we chose this site so it was very disappointing to be told it was not actually available, especially seeing as nowhere in a 25 mile radius sells or rents them.

The area is a phone data blackspot, it didn't work at all on the site for me, but the WiFi was also poor only working about 20% of the time, which was an issue.

All in all, we didn't enjoy our stay here at all given the dirty bathroom facilities and the overall loud/overcrowded vibe, and we were quite happy to leave. It's a shame as this could be such a nice site given its location, but the facilities are poor, they let in far too many customers for the size, and both the campsite and beach seem to attract the wrong sort of crowd.

From the manager: Hi there,
Thank you for your detailed review. We’re sorry your experience was not what you hoped for. The safety and comfort of our guests is very important to us. We want to clarify that the police are called multiple times when the noise occurs in the adjacent beach car park, and we work closely with them to manage this issue.

Our facilities are cleaned and restocked several times a day to maintain high standards, though we appreciate that with many guests, busy periods can still occur. Fire pits are offered on a first come, first served basis, and due to high demand during peak times, they can sell out quickly.

We know the site can feel busy at times, especially in summer, and we continue to review how best to balance the number of visitors while maintaining a good atmosphere. We appreciate your feedback and will keep working on improvements to make everyone’s stay more enjoyable.
Thanks,
Charlotte, Team Newgale

Local attractions

The smallest city in the UK, St Davids (15 minutes’ drive) has a cathedral that holds a shrine to St David, which was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Just across the River Alun are the imposing ruins of Llys yr Esgob, Tyddewi / St Davids Bishop’s Palace. Roller coasters, water rides and family attractions await at Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour), which also has a soft-play area and indoor games. If the kids (or you…) are more into animals, book a relaxed trek at Pembrokeshire Llama Sanctuary (45 minutes). Do you like sunrises as much as sunsets? Then get up early and head to Tenby (50 minutes), which has two east-facing sandy beaches on Bae Caerfyrddin. From Tenby it’s also possible to catch a boat to Caldey Island, where you might buy chocolate or perfume made by the resident monks.
