  • Small, wild site surrounded by woodland between Usk and Pontypool
  • A 20-minute drive to Raglan Castle, and 40 minutes to Tintern Abbey
  • Watersports and fishing at Llandegfedd Reservoir 20 minutes' walk
A small and nature-oriented site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has basic but spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is a wild site, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful dog-friendly spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (a 15- to 20-minute woodland walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We enjoyed our weekend at Cwmsoar. The campsite is clean, well kept and in a peaceful location. The owners were friendly and great that you could borrow a fire pit and buy logs onsite (bring cash!) Toilets were immaculate for portaloos.

Disliked We felt the walk to the lake for paddleboarding was perhaps made to seem easier on the campsite description than it is in reality - it’s pretty hilly if you’re carrying your own gear and took longer than expected to access the lakeshore. We took our boards down thinking this, along with swimming (based on the description), were allowed, but we were soon told by the reservoir police that we were not allowed to swim/paddleboard from the side of the lake we were on (the side walkable from the campsite) and instead would have to continue the walk around the reservoir (40mins or so we were told by other walkers) where we could pay to do those activities from the visitor’s centre. On a hot day with paddleboards on our backs and dogs in tow, this obviously wasn’t an option! So not a comment on the campsite but a word of warning to anyone planning to do the same!

From the manager: Thank you for taking time out for your detailed comments. Were pleased to hear you did enjoy your stay at Cwmsoar.

Im sorry you took your paddle boards on the woodland path to the North access of Llandegfedd lake. As you say its not a suitable route for paddle boards and access to the water is not permitted in this area.

We have information on site for Llandegfedd Lake, that explains opening times and that access to water/swimming is not permitted on the North Nature Reserve end of the lake.

There is a lovely woodland walk from Cwmsoar to the North Nature Reserve side of the lake [15 - 20 minutes], it is part of the circular walk and leads on to the visitors centre.

For those who are less able there is a North carpark and flat area from which to view the lake.

Llandegfedd lake visitors centre hosts many water activities, including paddle boarding, swimming and sailing and has a cafe. Please view their website for details.

We advertise as a basic site, with basic facilities. We have portaloos and use environmentally friendly fill.
We do not have washrooms, showers or kitchens.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked This was a lovely quiet site, well laid out and peaceful. It has basic amenities - toilets, water and waste disposal - but no showers and you need to take your rubbish with you (not a hard task). We were a self-contained motorhome so no problems for us. Friendly owners, would definitely use again if in the area.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
