  • Farm site with stunning 360-degree views of the Black Mountain
  • A five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales
  • On the Beacons Way trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Room to breathe and a friendly welcome – what more could you ask for from a scenic site like Eco Camping Wales in the Brecon Beacons’ gorgeous Glyntawe valley? Well, 360-degree views of the spectacular Black Mountain for starters. The environmentally friendly setup is another big bonus – the site channels cold mountain spring water into its hand-washing basins, for example (not for drinking, bring your own) – as is the back-to-nature feel (there are no concrete hardstandings or electric hook-ups here). This Glamorgan site encourages open-fire cooking across most of the grounds (bring reusable barbecues/firepits and raise them high off the ground, please) and phone reception is limited – so you can gleefully tell work they won’t be able to get in touch. Try to get as much time out of the office as you can to take on all the nearby treks; the owners particularly recommend roaming to Llyn y Fan Fawr lake on the long-distance Beacons Way trail that passes the park. Wander to one of the pubs a few minutes from the site too, pick up supplies at the village shop in Ynyswen or head to Ystradgynlais’s coffee shops. A few bits and pieces to be aware of if you’re planning on staying here: the shower is coin operated; you'll need to bring your own drinking water; firewood/kindling is for sale on site (the owners are happy for you to bring your own); and there’s no commercial waste so please be prepared to take all rubbish home and leave the space as you find it.

Meadow Field non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Beautiful site with very friendly owner. Lovely dark skies if you want to do some stargazing. There are designated areas for campfires if that is something you would like to do. There are eco toilets at the site or, if you want to have a shower of normal toilet you can walk up to the farmhouse. We loved our visit and would love to go back again.

The Oak Tree 2 non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (premium)

Liked We liked the privacy at the really nice pitch without many other peoples.

Disliked The facilities are very basic and has not been cleaned every day. No cold showers for free - you have to pay for showers even cold or hot. You have to take your litter with you. For the actual campsite Prices we would expect more concerning the facilities.

Meadow Field non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Stunning scenery with plenty of walks. Very quiet camp site with shops and pubs close by if needed. Shower and toilets were okay but for such a cheap price I didn’t expect too much. No phone signal which was lovely but this could be a problem for some.

Disliked Extremely long grass that needs cutting (knee high). Long grass meant more bugs, it also meant me and the dog were soaking in the mornings after a few steps outside. It was a nightmare and this was with no rain.

The Rise 1 non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (premium)

Liked Eco Camping Wales was incredible! It was my first time camping since a kid and it felt great. A lot of space to set up shop and not feel intruded upon, a brilliant view and great owners that were extremely welcoming and helpful.

Church Field non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked I had a wonderful stay at Eco Campsite near the Black Mountains. The location is stunning, with spacious pitches, amazing views, and a real sense of peace and privacy. Facilities are clean, eco-conscious, and well looked after – the compost toilets and hot showers were a nice surprise!

Perfect base for hiking and exploring the area. The owners were friendly and welcoming, and the whole site felt calm, natural, and relaxing. Highly recommended for anyone looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. There's even i lovely little pub just off the site which was a nice treat just after a 3hr hike

Disliked The only thing was the signage to the campsite which was quite hard to see from the road

Local attractions

It would be difficult to land on a better location for stints in south Wales than this one: set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s a five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales and its scenic Craig-y-Nos park. You can also hop on a horse at the local stable or hire an ebike to explore the mountains. Head to Henrhyd Falls (15 minutes' drive) to walk behind the wall of water; you might recognise this spot from several films, including Batman. The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is nearby as well, so drop in to see the primates before meeting the meerkats at Pen-y-Cae’s microzoo (five minutes). Wanting more waterfalls? There are three to see while wending your way along a walking loop near Pontneddfechan (15 minutes), a popular part of the national park for pottering about. Fan of fishing? Get the rod out at the River Tawe or by the Crai Reservoir (10 minutes). You could also angle down by the sea at the Gower’s gorgeous beaches near Swansea (an hour).
