  • Peaceful site opposite bike trails in Afan Forest Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Aberavon beach; 40 minutes to Brecon Beacons
  • Bike hire, shop and repair on site, plus café and play area
Mad for mountain biking? You’ll be among like-minded folk at Headstock Camping – this Glamorgan site is in the middle of the 3,900-hectare Afan Forest Park, a place that’s well known for its bike experiences. Come along to stay at this site and you’ll have the choice of single tracks through the forest, more exposed trails out on the hills and the jumps and short runs of Afan Bike Park, where you can hone your trick skills. Knowing that the campsite is likely to be popular with cyclists, the people here have set it all up with the things you’ll need, including a bike shop and repair centre, a bike hire service and a bike wash. This scenic forest location isn’t all about the bikes though – the park also has plenty of walking trails, a play area and a miniature steam train to ride on, and you can glimpse the area’s history at the South Wales Miners Museum, a few minutes’ walk from the campsite. Naturally, you’ll also need plenty of food for all this activity so there’s also a café on site serving homemade dishes with a Welsh accent (although you’re also welcome to light up a barbecue or campfire for alfresco cooking if you prefer…) All of this is easily accessed via main roads (the M4 and Port Talbot are about 15 minutes’ drive away) and yet the site itself is a most peaceful spot with very little light pollution to spoil the views of starry skies by night. All the essential facilities are covered, with wifi and a washing-up area. Toilets/showers, including accessible bathrooms, located in the car park within walking distance of the site. This is where you'll park your car for free too - there's one space per booking.

Local attractions

The bike trails in the forest park have something for everyone, from a 5km rookie trail up to a 44km black run that usually takes a good few hours to negotiate. If that’s not quite sated your appetite for adrenaline, how about hurling yourself off an old colliery tower on the ziplines at Zip World Tower (35 minutes’ drive)? Afan Forest Park has a good collection of walking trails too, but hikers might also like to head up to the Brecon Beacons National Park for the Four Falls waterfall route (40 minutes) or down onto the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes) for coastal walks. If it’s just a beach day you’re after, Aberavon beach is about 20 minutes away. On damp days, it’s very handy to have the South Wales Miners Museum a couple of minutes walk from the site; other options might include Plantasia Tropical Zoo (half an hour) or going underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (45 minutes).

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Clean loos, lovely National park and trails

Disliked: Out of more than a dozen campsites this summer, this was our only disappointment. The campervan pitches are in a public car park which is open at night and next to a main road. There were cars driving in and out of the car park all night, which made us feel vulnerable. The campsite for tents is v pretty and on side of a hill but not suitable for campervans. Also the showers needed tokens, which despite speaking to someone on the phone, we never got. I understand it’s mostly a bike stop for mountain bikers but over £30 feels too much for what felt like a roadside car park pitstop.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The staff were amazing especially Sam, Caleb and Kaylee so friendly couldn’t do enough for us. The food was brilliant especially the breakfasts in the cafe. There is a great play area for the kids, a miner’s museum on site (highly recommend to see), lots of amazing bike and walking trails. Facilities very clean and in good condition too. We are definitely going again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic staff, very friendly & helpful. It was my first camping experience and Sam, the owner was great at helping me get settled. Showers & toilets were very clean. They are quite far from the field, on a steep hill but as long as you are aware before you go it’s no problem. Think of it as a good workout. The campers were friendly. They are family and dog-friendly. Sam has lots of ideas and plans for developing the site so I’m looking forward to seeing how it progresses. I’ll definitely go back.

Disliked: Toilets are so far away but hopefully the council will allow Sam to put facilities closer (as he proposes) to benefit the tourists and improve visitor experience.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We have just come home and we were so glad we chose to take our two very little ones here. Sam and team were great especially doing the rounds and having a chat to check-in with people. Others have mentioned in their reviews the distance to the toilets but we didn't find this a bother nor did kids and the showers were so clean and hot! We went ahead and had a fire pit which was fab as well. Also although the field is on a slight hill, there are plenty of flatter areas to pitch and none of the campers we spoke to were bothered. Lovely park attached to the museum and visitors centre. I felt very safe and would recommend to our friends who camp with kids too. Thanks everyone we had a lovely 2 nights with you

Electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Very friendly. Beautiful location. Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked: Toilets and showers are locked overnight so you need to request a key from campsite owner. Quite a busy road just opposite the pitches which is noisy. Pitches are close together.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location and staff were really nice.

Disliked: The annoying flies, the fact that the bathroom was closed at night, which is really rude; and no facilities to wash your dishes.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your honest review. The flys are definitely out in force this year. Although the toilets are locked at night we do provide keys. Please let me know if you didn't receive this during your stay. There is a sink in the shower block for pot washing, and we are working with the land owners to install some outdoor pot wash sinks. Regards Sam
