  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A539; half a mile to pubs and a railway station
Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally heated toilet and shower block. With easy access off the A539 dual carriageway, the park grounds are spacious and dotted with trees, but please be aware there may be some traffic noise. With so much room on site, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit among the trees (although when you're feeling more sociable, it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub). The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more. Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

What customers say

Campsite gets thumbs up for spotless facilities, helpful staff, and handy spot near shops. Pitches generally neat & roomy. Some guests heard road noise & a few found electric hook-up iffy. Still, many had a great time & would come back.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked nothing

Disliked 1. rude staff - approached my kids when i was not at site and demanded payment for kids when it was actually free
2. outright liars - first area they gave us was at the edge of the park near a field and 5 mins from toilets and it was nauseating from the muck spread in the field - when asked to move gave another space on a hill - when we asked for a flat space she said they were full but we did not see any other tents pitched - we were the only tent at a very large area. when we moved a picnic table to take that only little flat area of space then we were told that we were too close to another electric when the others were pitched 25 m away and the electric point was still a good 8 m away she still inisted we move tent to a hilly slope although there was plenty of flat sites available - we were repeatedly told the site was full

3. no toilets or shower close to non electric
4. so much traffic from roads could not get any sleep
5. shell pump close by have lights all night and just spoils the ambience for everyone
6. no rules for dogs 3 dogs approached our tent when off lead and one came very close - i think lack of a dog exercising area contributes to this problem as well

From the manager: Good morning

Thank you for your review of James Estate. To clarify the points you have raised, You were given a non electric pitch at the bottom of the park. When you raised the smell from the field we pointed out to you all the non electric pitches and advised you could choose from any non electric pitches. As you were the first non electric arrival i advised you had pick of the park. You chose plot 29 out of all plots despite it being on a slope. When we did a security walk around we found 3 people at your tent despite telling us it was only yourself and 1 other adult staying. We asked your children where you were as they had been left unattended onsite. We called you and asked you to pop to reception to got though your booking as there was only 2 people on your booking. We apologised for the mix up with the children. We then asked you politely to move you tent to by the number the way we had asked you pitch up originally as you had pitched on an electric grass pitch that booked out to someone else over the weekend and also due to fire regulations you would have been too close. We apologise if you believed us asking you to move to the pitch you chose was us being rude as this what not our intention at all. With the statement you were 25m away from the electric box you had unfortunately actually pitched up right behind within a meter, which is why you were politely asked to move down a little bit to be on the pitch you chose. You were advised that electric grass pitches were full but not non electric pitches. We came past on 4 occasions during your stay and advised you could have any of the 30 plus non electric pitches and each time you chose 29. We are really sorry you didn't enjoy your stay here. Kind Regards.

Great site with good facilities and a good base to explore local area.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Easy to find. Booked a non electric grass pitch, only booked the day before and as he had just cut the grass we stayed on a gravel path. Good for us, and as he said he didnt want us to get stuck or slip on the wet grass.

Disliked Nothing-knew about the road noise as it pretty obvious. Sleepy ok anyway as didnt really hear it in the van. Maybe the grass pitches wouldn’t be as good as they are right by the road, so glad we didnt actually pitch there.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Pitch was grass and perfect for my tent. Shower block was open 24 hour, very clean and warm which was very welcome. Drinking water available to fill my water bladder..loved the fact that there are services near to the site, so a 5 minute walk and a Greggs breakfast was forthcoming.

Disliked There is road noise from the A483 but helped me sleep which was a good thing.

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds. Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee. For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).
