  • Quiet tourer site on a North Wales farm 15 minutes’ drive from Wrexham
  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct 20 minutes’ drive and Shrewsbury 35 minutes
  • Access to nearly 30 acres of private land with mowed paths; farm shop
Like the sound of days passed on jaunts that span two countries? If the answer is a definite yes, book a spot at Hill Farm, 15 minutes’ drive from Wrexham in North Wales and five minutes from the border with England. From there, it’s a doddle to get to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (20 minutes), or whip into Shropshire for a day exploring historic Shrewsbury (35 minutes). Set on a hill with fabulous woodland and valley views, this peaceful tourer site offers up a handful of grass pitches in a small, secluded paddock and a glorious cottage garden to relax in. If you have kids in tow, they’ll surely love feeding the hens that range freely about the place (just ask the farmer for some grain). The campsite is steps away from a farm shop bursting with tasty local produce, which is open daily from 9am to 7pm – handy if you run out of supplies when making breakfast or supper. Guests also have access to nearly 30 acres of private land with mowed paths, making post-lunch strolls easy. There are convenience stores in Penley (five minutes) and Whitchurch (15 minutes), or you can head into Wrexham for major replenishment of provisions.

What customers say

This peaceful campsite has friendly owners and a charming farm. The farm shop’s local produce is highly recommended. Road noise is noted but quietens overnight. While showers and washing-up facilities are limited, it’s manageable for short stays. Phone signal is weak, but guest Wi-Fi is available. Lots of space for dog walking.

Liked We loved our stay at Hill Farm, it was peaceful and idyllic and we were sad to leave. Such beautiful surroundings and the hosts were very nice. We bought some lovely bits from the farm shop too, delicious apple juice. Toilet facilities were very clean. We would love to come and stay again!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked This is a beautiful site, with friendly, welcoming owners. We booked for 3 nights over the bank holiday weekend, it was the ideal place to avoid the crowds and enjoy a chilled long weekend with our dog. The mown paths in the fields were ideal for us to walk her. There is a very small, well priced farm shop which stocked lots of essentials and of course, the free range eggs from the chickens on site.

Being next to a road, it is a little noisy, we thought this would be an issue for us as we generally avoid campsites so close to a busier road, however - during the night there was very little traffic and we slept well. Phone & internet signal very sketchy (we’re on EE) but guest wi-fi is available, it doesn’t work in the camping field, but there are a table & chairs by the farm shop, so we just sat there when we needed to get online. In fairness, it was quite nice not to be able to get online so much!

Thanks so much for a lovely stay, we’ll definitely be back!☺️

Disliked Road noise as mentioned above, but we slept well as it did quieten overnight.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked We stayed here for one night as a half way stop over. We had a lovely welcome and shown to our pitch, we were the only ones there. The pitch was flat right next to the chicken field which was lush. The toilet is located at the hosts house but that wasn’t a problem for us. The grounds are so pretty especially at night with all the garden lights. There are 30 acres of fields to walk with the dog which was great for us. The small self serve farm shop sells a range of farm produce at a very reasonable price, all looked great. We got some eggs and tomatoes! There are no showers or washing up facilities but this wasn’t an issue for us for one night but we definitely would to stayed another night if they were provided. The road noise didn’t bother us. We really liked the charm of this little site and would definitely visit again if in the area. There is no phone signal on Vodaphone and the WiFi didn’t work in the field but did closer to the house but again not an issue for one night.

Disliked No showers or washing up facilities but fine for 1 night stop over we managed.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Great location, nice and chilled. When we stayed there was only 3 vans with great views over the chicken coup. A great little shop onsite with a honesty box and chip and pin. There are a few fields that you can explore which was great for our dog. Great location, fantastic price, great hosts and a chilled environment.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Everything, beautiful place to stay. The farm shop was a plus we tried the rump steak and lamb chops both amazing. We had seen reviews about the road noise and of a day it can be heard but nothing intrusive but of a night it’s so quiet and peaceful we slept so well. We were the only ones there so it was just us and the chickens. The owners were friendly and helpful couldn’t fault any other ff it. Will definitely be returning

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked We booked a last minute one night stay as we are fairly local and the weather was looking good for that day. We will definitely return at some point! I found the campsite to be very peaceful, it is in a lovely setting and you can tell a lot of care has gone into this. Loved feeding the chickens, the farm shop was brilliant, we took home some delicious jam and apple juice that was made on site, as well basil and fresh eggs. The owners are lovely and very helpful, and were great with my very chatty 5 year old!

Disliked Didn’t dislike anything, it was perfect for our stay. No showers but not really needed for a short stay. Not much phone signal on the camping field but that’s not a bad thing, WiFi can be accessed near the main building if needed.

Local attractions

There’s a brace of National Trust-owned sites to look up: Erddig Hall (20 minutes’ drive) is open for guided tours of the stately red-brick manor house and fine formal gardens, while Chirk Castle (25 minutes) is an interesting mash-up of defence fortress and sumptuous 18th-century apartments. There’s more unusual architecture at late-medieval Plas Newydd Historic House (25 minutes), which was remodelled as a half-timbered mansion in the 1930s. A scenic walk across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (20 minutes) takes in views of Llangollen Canal and the River Dee, or you can see more of the Denbighshire countryside while riding the heritage steam train on Llangollen Railway (25 minutes). Over the border in Blighty, take the kids to watch raptor displays at Shropshire Falconry (25 minutes), or hire a barge for the day at Whixall Marina (20 minutes) to float gently down the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal. Another option is to head for Shrewsbury (35 minutes) and have a poke around the red-stone castle and its Shropshire Regimental Museum or take a wander along the River Severn in The Quarry park.
