  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Warm welcome onto the site with clear instructions of where to camp and where the facilities are. Beautiful location with plenty space.

Disliked The generator was noisy, but they were having issues with it and worked very quickly to try and get them resolved.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked View at location.

Disliked Payed for electricity and generator kept tripping out . Another generator was put in place Saturday teatime but it still did not work at our connection point .
Lack of contact on site to resolve issues.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. The generator was in working order when you arrived on Friday - unfortunately your motorhome kept tripping the electricity (which was no fault of the generator as other connecting points were working fine)....

However, we apologie for the issue we had with generator on Saturday afternoon as the fuel pump decided to stop working. Thankfully an engineer was able to come out straight away and arrange a replacement generator within a couple of hours and everybody were back up and running by late afternoon - hopefully this won't be happen again.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Beautiful scenic views this is where it stopped.

Disliked I have stayed in many different types of campsite and did understand this was a back to basics site, unfortunately there is back to basics and there is very dirty toilets with bins overflowing with rubbish.
Toilets hadn't been cleaned in a long time, dirty pot wash area with just cold water to wash your dishes with. There was no plumbing and water just run out onto the floor below.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Bins had been emptied 2 days previous by Veolia so this is factually uncorrect, toilets are cleaned daily and every couple of hours at peak times, We know the toilets are not flash but as you must of seen a new building is up and in the proccess of been kitted out - Thats a new toilet block - Thanks

Liked What a brilliant little get away! If you’re looking for a beautiful setting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the towns this is the place to go…the surrounding scenery was just beautiful. Amenities were basic but workable and clean! Even though it was wet and windy the ground had good drainage as it never seemed to become soggy. I would recommend this site and hope to be returning very soon thank you guys! 😀

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
