Pen y Bryn Camping is a pop-up site in a five-acre field on the south-western edge of Snowdonia National Park, roughly five minutes' drive from the town centre of Bala and the shores of Bala Lake. Easily accessible via the A494, this spot makes a great base for touring all corners of the national park – active adventures like rafting, hiking, biking and wild swimming are the name of the game in this outdoorsy part of the world, and family-friendly attractions like Zip World Fforest (40 minutes) are within striking distance too. Thinking of making Pen y Bryn Camping your next call? Just a few things to be aware of before staying at this working farm – the site does not allow dogs and has an all-round off-grid approach to camping (facilities include a portable toilet and a drinking water tap but please note there are no showers on site). While the nearest village of Sarnau is pleasant, it doesn't have much in the way of facilities – head to Bala if you're after a supermarket, pubs or places to pick up souvenirs. Pen y Bryn Camping allows barbecues (when properly lifted off the ground) and campfires (when safely set up in the designated areas), either of which would make an excellent accompaniment to the far-reaching views over the Berwyn range and Aran mountains.

Liked: Very easy to find and only 2 miles outside of Bala.
Owner messaged on the day of the stay and was available to speak to throughout the day.
Clear instructions were given and she came to greet us when we arrived.
Fire pit and wood were offered and given.
Loos were “posher” portaloos. Not smelly, they came with disinfectant, hand sanitiser and room spray and one has a mirror in.
Drinking water was available along with a bowl and washing up bits to make washing up easier. Would recommended and we would stay here again. Thank you

Liked: Back to basics site but really quiet and perfect location close to Lake Bala. Really helpful owner - Anna? - who recommended places to eat in Bala and was really helpful.

Liked: It was amazing trip, our stay was good, host Ana was amazing, she went out of the way to help us, provide us with warm water every night for baby milk. Definately recommed to everyone.

Liked: Free fire pit, cheap wood, toilets are spotless. I loved the little things like free lighters, bricks for bbqs etc. It’s also 7 minutes from Bala lake, perfect for kayaking etc. win win win. We were also with another couple and the staff offered to blow the bed up for them (which I thought was lovely). Would recommend and will be going back.

Disliked: Some parts are uneven (damaged my car) but if you keep to the roads then you’ll be fine! Enough space to pitch a tent on flat ground
