  • Cosy, insulated huts with spectacular Tanat Valley views
  • Lake Vyrnwy 35 minutes’ drive; Shrewsbury 50 minutes
  • Well-equipped kitchen; hill walks from site; shops 10 minutes’ drive
No noise, no stress, just peace and quiet. That’s what you get when staying at Wild Valley Huts, set in the spectacular Tanat Valley, 10 minutes’ drive from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant village in Powys. Whether you’re up for adventuring in the Welsh hills or hoping for a romantic escape, these bijou wooden huts are well insulated to keep you warm and cosy whatever the weather or season. Wood burning stoves will also keep you snug (wood is supplied). All units have well-equipped kitchen corners for putting together simple meals, ensuite shower rooms and living space with comfy sofas for chilling and TV time. Bedding and towels are provided. Access hikes and cycle rides in the Berwyn Mountains (often less walked than Snowdonia) and Tanat Valley right from the doorstep of your hut, and you have plenty of options for exercising any accompanying canines. And there’s no need to go anywhere at all if you don’t feel like it. Have a stroll around the private woods, settle down on your decking with a good book, spark up the firepit for a barbecue, or cuddle up and gaze at the stars on cloudless nights. Pootle down to Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant to pick up essentials like barbecue bits from the butchers, have a look around the co-operative art shop and perhaps down a pint in one of the pubs. You’re also only half an hour’s drive from Oswestry for supermarket stock-ups, loads of pubs and food festivals in the summer.

Local attractions

From the site, hike up through the woods to Pystyll Rhaedr Waterfall (two hours’ walk), or follow more challenging routes to Caider Bronwen (an hour and 10 minutes) for stunning views over the Berwyn Mountains. Travelling with kids? Take them pony trekking around the perimeter of Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes’ drive), follow the woodland sculpture trail for easy family walks, or venture out on the water in a dinghy. If you’re brave enough to try wild swimming (perhaps not in winter), Llyn Tegid lake is the spot for you. Bala Adventure and Watersports Centre (both 40 minutes) has a huge range of watery activities available, from windsurfing to kayaking, as well as archery, raft building, abseiling and gorge walking back on dry land – in short, something to suit almost everybody. In Chester (an hour and five minutes), you can circumnavigate the ancient Roman walls, tour the Roman amphitheatre, or treat the kids to a day watching the animal antics at Chester Zoo (an hour and 10 minutes).
