Busy campsite
Grass pitches

  • Sheltered and peaceful pitches on the banks of the Wick River
  • A 10-minute walk to Wick; 25 minutes' drive to John o' Groats
  • Part of a community enterprise
What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. The site has modern facilities including male and female toilets and showers, a family shower room and a disabled toilet and shower room. There's also a washing-up area and a laundry room. A play park is just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

What customers say

Community-run spot gets props for great, modern facilities and friendly staff. Riverside location perfect for strolls into Wick. Pitches mostly spacious, though temporary loos need a spruce-up (new ones planned!). Fab NC500 base.

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked Location was great. Loads of potential in the facility.

Disliked Cleanliness was disappointing. Loads of maintenance issues with toilet block and cleanliness left a lot to be desired.

From the manager: Thank you for the review and feedback.

We are sorry you had an issue with cleanliness as we take pride in ensuring the toilets are spotlessly clean. Our cleaner cleans the toilets daily from 11am to 2pm, and as can be seen from many other reviews on Pitchup and Google, our guests comment on how clean everything is. We notice that you checked in after 5pm, so this was several hours after the toilet block was cleaned, and whilst we find that most guests tidy up after themselves, it is possible that other guests have not done so and this is what you have found. Our wardens are supposed to check the toilet block around 5pm and again before they close up for the evening, but if they are very busy with check ins or serving in the shop this is not always possible, but is something we will remind all staff about.

Regarding mantenance in the toilet block, we are having some issues with the toilet seats coming loose and they are having to be repaired daily, but we have ordered some different fixings which will hopefully do the trick.

Lovely toilet block…

Local attractions

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
