  • Peaceful pods site in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
  • A 10-minute drive the shore in Balmaha; 25 minutes from Ben Lomond
  • A short walk from the West Highland Way and surrounded by more walks
Good things come in small packages… that’s especially true when it comes to The Pods at Ardyle, a small and splendid space in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Half an hour’s walk from Drymen village, this is a very advantageous base. Location-wise, there’s a lot for The Pods at Ardyle to brag about. The site is a short walk from the 96-mile West Highland Way walking trail around Loch Lomond, and a 10-minute drive from Balmaha on the shore of Loch Lomond, so guests can go paddleboarding, kayaking or wild swimming very easily. From Balmaha, there are water buses that go to Luss on the western shore too. Equally, the site’s features have plenty of bragging rights. It's a peaceful and characterful place at the top of a field, so there are stunning views from the site, including of Loch Lomond and the surrounding fields and hills. There’s a Tesla electric car charging point, along with other sustainable features such as solar panels and a biomass boiler. The small pods have an ensuite shower room and a cosy little kitchen with a hob, microwave and fridge. With comfy pull-down beds and pull-out tables, the space is very much maximised. Outside, unwind on the handmade wooden decking, which has a rattan table and chairs (with your own binoculars or one of the Scottish books provided in hand, or perhaps to spy on the sunset colours)? Wifi and a smart TV with YouTube and Netflix are also provided. Bring your wellies and walking boots for the local walks and hikes; there are hundreds around these parts. Those looking to get further away can make use of the bus stop 15 minutes’ walk away and good train links from Balloch.

Local attractions

Eat up the east shore scenery with a climb up Conic Hill (10 minutes’ drive). Of course, Ben Lomond (25 minutes) is a big bucket list climb too; it’s 974 metres tall, after all. On the southern shore of Loch Lomond, things are just as sublime, as you’ll soon see from the 200-acre Balloch Castle & Country Park (25 minutes), packed with waterfront wildlife trails. Away from Loch Lomond, there are more spectacular natural features to take in such as the Devil's Pulpit (20 minutes). The stream passes between two tall cliffs and there’s a stone stairway that will give you a view over the waterfall. City stroll, anyone? Stirling (35 minutes) has many battle locations and Glasgow (55 minutes) has a huge music scene. Even Edinburgh (an hour and 35 minutes) is within reach for those wanting to climb up to Arthur’s Seat or the castle over the city.
