  • Quiet family-run farm site with scenic views of the open countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed and 30 mins' walk to Foulden
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of beaches at St Abbs and Coldingham
Lazing about is very much on the agenda at Shepherd’s Rest, a serene site in private meadows with views of open countryside and not much else but the sound of sheep in nearby fields... If all this seems like bliss, this secluded Berwickshire setting is worth seeking out for some solitude – it's well away from traffic and road noise, and has splendid dark skies for fireside stargazing on clear nights. It’s also a fab place to set yourself up for explores in the Scottish Borders, with England mere miles away and the Northumberland tourist town of Berwick-upon-Tweed within 15 minutes' drive for independent shops, supermarkets and sea views from its Elizabethan fortifications. When the tide’s low, stroll from here to Holy Island to see the 11th-century priory, restored castle and upside-down boathouses before supping on a little Lindisfarne Mead. Bikes can be hired in town to take on paths like the Tweed Cycle Way, a long-distance route ending in Biggar, 95 miles away. Closer to home, Foulden is the nearest village (five minutes’ drive), a pretty place of old cottages and an ancient barn overlooking the Cheviot Hills; guests can walk here to see the vistas in half an hour via footpaths straight from the site. Another local village is Ayton, under a 10-minute drive where a continental-inspired café bar organises all sorts of live music, film and comedy shenanigans. If seaside saunters are more your thing, small fishing villages are dotted along the coast, with St Abbs and Coldingham (both under 20 minutes) being some of the prettiest.

What customers say

A tranquil, tidy park with great ablutions. Owners are super friendly, helpful, and add thoughtful touches like an honesty shop. Lovely rural spot for stargazing, though some found toilet door noise a bit much.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Toilet facilities and overall cleanliness is great. Great field and grass is just right.

Disliked To me. It doesn't feel like you're camping. I got told my pitch number after calling them and for £25/n it felt like I was in an extremely diet BYO glamping experience.

I just really didn't feel comfortable with it. Having been given paperwork as I'm pitching up was really weird and for the price I've had much more cozier campsites for much less.

For £25 and we *have* to walk to our pitch, but rather saying it "helps give the camping experience" Just say it helps keep the grass well kept? Why not be honest on your site?

I dunno, I've had more enjoyment and a more fulfilling experience from much more affordable campsites for half that cost. It's not a laxxed sort of site to me, felt very rule-focused. Some people like that. I really don't, left as soon as I got up.

From the manager: It is normal procedure for our site to allocate pitch numbers on arrival, as this avoids people pitching to close to each other for safety reasons and makes sure everyone has a nice large pitch with a view, not the back of someones tent.

We do not allow cars on the tent pitch area as this makes for a safer and more pleasant camping experiance, especially if people have young children with them, the pitch used in this instance was 70ft from the car park and barrows are provided to carry camping equipment if needed. We do not feel we are over the top with any site rules, but we do want everyone to have a nice stay with us :)

Excellent site with new and clean facilities. The owner is friendly.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I only spent one night camping here, instead of the planned two, due to upcoming bad weather, but the facilities were spotless and the owners were lovely. Had everything you could need really. Beautiful quiet location out in the countryside. Loved the big floppy eared goats. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked We loved this family oriented site. It’s small and perfectly formed with good facilities, exactly what we needed. Spotlessly clean Showers, toilets and small communal kitchen area. Having a kettle available and some ice blocks we could borrow was fantastic as our electrics blew when we arrived. I loved that it’s quiet with only a few van spots

Disliked N/A liked it all!

Rowan shepherd's hut

Liked We absolutely LOVED this place. It’s super well maintained, super cute and they have the sweetest goats ever!! And the night sky is amazing on a clear day with very little light pollution.
We loved the honestly shop - we got some marshmallows from there and I loved that you could donate to plant a tree too.
The owners were really lovely too.
There’s an option where you can ask to be shown around the farm too to learn about how they run it. We didn’t do this due to lack of time, but for sure would do when we return!

Local attractions

Sitting in an area so rich in history, it’s no surprise that this site’s close to several stately structures. Alnwick Castle – that of Harry Potter fame – is a 45-minute drive and has coastal views to take in on the way, while visits to Ford & Etal Estate (25 minutes) get you two castles in one, along with bread baking experiences at the mill (in summer), cuppas in a traditional tea room and visits to horses in an equestrian centre. River paddling’s also popular here in warmer weather and on the way home you can stop off at the Grade I-listed Royal Border Bridge (15 minutes) over the Tweed as dusk falls to see the arches lit up in lots of colours. The Georgian town square and hall of Kelso are a 40-minute drive, along with the abbey and racecourse. And for art, architecture and everything in between? Shepherd’s Rest is an hour and 20 minutes from the cultural hubs of Newcastle and Edinburgh.
