  • Quiet family-run farm site with scenic views of the open countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed and 30 mins' walk to Foulden
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of beaches at St Abbs and Coldingham
Lazing about is very much on the agenda at Shepherd’s Rest, a serene site in private meadows with views of open countryside and not much else but the sound of sheep in nearby fields... If all this seems like bliss, this secluded Berwickshire setting is worth seeking out for some solitude – it's well away from traffic and road noise, and has splendid dark skies for fireside stargazing on clear nights. It’s also a fab place to set yourself up for explores in the Scottish Borders, with England mere miles away and the Northumberland tourist town of Berwick-upon-Tweed within 15 minutes' drive for independent shops, supermarkets and sea views from its Elizabethan fortifications. When the tide’s low, stroll from here to Holy Island to see the 11th-century priory, restored castle and upside-down boathouses before supping on a little Lindisfarne Mead. Bikes can be hired in town to take on paths like the Tweed Cycle Way, a long-distance route ending in Biggar, 95 miles away. Closer to home, Foulden is the nearest village (five minutes’ drive), a pretty place of old cottages and an ancient barn overlooking the Cheviot Hills; guests can walk here to see the vistas in half an hour via footpaths straight from the site. Another local village is Ayton, under a 10-minute drive where a continental-inspired café bar organises all sorts of live music, film and comedy shenanigans. If seaside saunters are more your thing, small fishing villages are dotted along the coast, with St Abbs and Coldingham (both under 20 minutes) being some of the prettiest.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely small site, just what we needed for a weekend escape! Spacious pitches, immaculate toilets and kitchen facilities, lovely owners. Can easily rent a fire pit (comes with kindling, logs etc) for your entire stay. Beautiful view of the sunset over the fields. Would absolutely recommend to friends and strangers alike!

Liked Everything you need is there.
Toilets and showers kept clean and tidy. The site overall was clean and tidy .

Disliked It was a wee bit further out from Berwick Town centre than we thought, so it ended up being a bit pricey on taxis if you are going in and out and don't have a vehicle

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Great facilities and nice extra touches including a kitchen and covered area to sit with table football, with friendly owners. Quiet location and reasonably flat pitches. Lovely views.

Disliked Only two showers which is shared with Campervan’s, tents and shepherds huts so gets busy. Get up early to avoid queues.

Liked Fantastic little campsite. Very peaceful spot. Well thought out separate areas for campervans and tents. Great for cyclists and families alike. The owners are very accommodating and their attention to detail shows throughout the campsite. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to go back next year.

Liked What a beautiful time we had at Shepherds Rest! The site is just the right size. The showers and toilets are clean. The inside bit for playing games and the honesty shop was a lovely touch. The butterfly trail was a highlight for us and seeing the goats and chickens was lovely as well. I like that the spaces are pre assigned. The size of the spot was good (we were in a campervan). Check-in was easy and straight forwards. It was quite a lovely and in a perfect location for accessing the local attractions.

Disliked The only thing that could have been better is a bit of a barrier between the campervan area and the tent area. Our van backed immediately onto, a very pleasant, group of girls. If there was a bit of spacing or some shrubbery that would have made an already good experience better.

I believe there are two showers at the site. There was a Q in the morning to shower. I have never really had this before. Maybe an extra couple of showers would be good but also it was pretty full that night. I didn’t mind waiting.

Local attractions

Sitting in an area so rich in history, it’s no surprise that this site’s close to several stately structures. Alnwick Castle – that of Harry Potter fame – is a 45-minute drive and has coastal views to take in on the way, while visits to Ford & Etal Estate (25 minutes) get you two castles in one, along with bread baking experiences at the mill (in summer), cuppas in a traditional tea room and visits to horses in an equestrian centre. River paddling’s also popular here in warmer weather and on the way home you can stop off at the Grade I-listed Royal Border Bridge (15 minutes) over the Tweed as dusk falls to see the arches lit up in lots of colours. The Georgian town square and hall of Kelso are a 40-minute drive, along with the abbey and racecourse. And for art, architecture and everything in between? Shepherd’s Rest is an hour and 20 minutes from the cultural hubs of Newcastle and Edinburgh.
