General

  • Luxury site with stream and hill views in the Scottish Borders
  • Fishing from site; 40 minutes' drive to 7Stanes mountain biking
  • Shop on site; two pubs with food within a 15-minute drive

Bring your boots and bikes to the Scottish Borders… it's a fine combo at Ettrick Valley Yurts: wilderness all around and warm, cosy interiors for a Borders berth. A little stream runs by the site for paddling and messing about in; it joins up with the River Ettrick, which is fenced off but easily accessible for further exploring.

Families and safety are a top priority at this park: all guests' kit is shipped from the car park to yurts by wheelbarrow, keeping the hilly grounds car-free and safe for all sizes of guests. Essentials are well covered too, at the toilets and hot showers a couple of minutes’ walk away, and at the shop selling firewood, kindling and basic supplies. The site team is also happy to help with maps, leaflets and inside tips on the best stuff to do in the area.

Whatever you get up to, you’ll have a warm hearth to return to: woodburners keep interiors toasty and there’s a gas hob and grill for making snacks. Raised decks outside with picnic tables, firepits and barbecues mean you can sizzle your bangers as you gaze at the starry skies… and a coolbox is provided too for keeping your drinks nice and fresh.

If you'd prefer to eat out, pubs are 10 and 15 minutes’ drive away.

The area was beautiful and tranquil

    Disliked:

The yurt was dirty, the crockery was dirty and still had food on from the previous peoole- these clearly hadn't been checked before we arrived, the slats in the bed were out when the bed was pulled out so my husband had to fix them back in place, there was a leak in the top of the yurt, the solar lights were broken, the facilities were not clean and it was not as advertised on the website. It was not up to scratch for £400 I will not book again.

Feedback emailed to owners disappointed I got no reply08/16/2021

The set up of the site and area.

    The potential

    Disliked:

Hello we have just had a weekend stay with yourselves and whilst we had a great time I felt I wanted to let you know about a few issues we had with our stay, at £400 for 2 nights I’m afraid I couldn’t really let them go.

We arrived on Friday evening and although raining it wasn’t too heavy yet there was an obvious drip from the ceiling of the yurt which had in fact soaked one of our bags of clothes and was directly above the bed. The satin was soaking also. This was obviously a previous problem as there appears to be plastic sheeting on some areas of the ceiling.

I feel for this price the beds should have been made up for us. I would rather not have seen the quality of the duvets and pillows which were quite frankly ‘scabby’. We didn’t actually receive a double sheet either so slept for two nights with a single one accross the bed. This isn’t luxury. Again for the price this should be included.

The grill had no knob so was not usable. We have (unfortunately) fussy kids who wanted toast that we couldn’t give them due to having no grill.

Two of our bbq tools were broken and therefore useless.

The fire was not made up as advertised.
I feel supplying only enough tea lights for one night of our stay was also not great.
There was rope hanging out at parts of the yurt and where this was indeed rustic it certainly wasn’t twinkly fairy lights as advertised.

Small things like supplying charcoal, ample tea lights and ice in the cool box (which is useless without it) and ensuring the beds made on arrival (especially with a 4pm checkin) and supplying a grill that works) would have made this experience and justified the price.

Your site is beautiful and we are the kind of people that can have fun anywhere but I was left really disappointed by the things mentioned above. For this price we just expected more. It would have been so simple to make the improvements so that we could have the experience promised by your website.

I hope you will understand and appreciate our feedback.

Sadly I received no reply from the owners which would have been polite at the very least. I dislike leaving poor reviews but for the reasons above I feel this is not value for money

Our first time in a yurt, we were very pleasantly surprised. Beautifully furnished, comfortable and well equipped with the basics including clean, fresh bedding. The tank of drinking/ cooking water, candle lamps and personal barbecue were lovely finishing touches. Plenty of space for the kids to explore. Toilet/Shower facilities were clean and well maintained.

Local attractions

This is top walking country with many paths passing close to the site; the site staff are true experts in where to wander nearby and are happy to share their top tips.

To explore further, drive half an hour to the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve and Trail, through wildlife haven moorlands to a fab waterfall, and stopping off (recommend the tipsters at Ettrick Valley) for a wander round St Mary’s Loch on the way back. Fishing types can try their luck (with permits) on the waters there and seek trout and grayling on the Ettrick.

If bikes are more your bag, Glentress and Innerleithen (both 40 minutes away) are part of the 7Stanes network of mountain biking centres, with bike hire and trails for all levels of ability and nerve. If you’re bringing a bike with you, the Ettrick Valley folks will keep it locked up safely in their store.

The Scottish Borders are big on history too, what with William Wallace being made guardian of the Scots at Selkirk (30 minutes) and Sir Walter Scott settling down at Abbotsford (40 minutes). The ruined abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh and Jedburgh are all within a 50-minute drive and it's about an hour to Floors and Hermitage castles.
