  • Back-to-basics camping on a family-run smallholding in East Lothian
  • A 15-minute drive to North Berwick; access Edinburgh by train
  • Pop-up grass pitches with showers, close to hill walks and the beach
No-frills but fabulous views – Wamphray Croft is a pop-up campsite in gorgeous East Lothian countryside, set on a well-groomed, flat and easily accessible field. Views from the camping field stretch to Gullane, the Fife coastline and the landmark North Berwick Law – it’s just a 10-minute hop by car to several local attractions. The site is surrounded on all sides by farmland and well away from the road, with a large grass play area separate from the pitches so kids can enjoy ball games or fly kites in complete safety. Dogs are welcome on site too, and if you’d rather explore on two feet with your pet, there are walks aplenty in the vicinity, including the dedicated canine trails at Smeaton Dogwood (10 minutes’ drive). Guests at the working smallholding can soon make pals with the friendly miniature donkeys residing in the adjoining paddock, and if you’d like to get to know them a bit better, there’s an opportunity to feed and groom them every morning. Travelling by public transport? The helpful site owners can pick you up (by prior arrangement), or you can walk to the site from Drem railway station in 15 minutes. Otherwise, there’s ample space at each pitch for you to park one vehicle. Please note that there is no electricity available at this off-grid site, but facilities do include showers, portable toilets and drinking water as well as a shared firepit.

Liked: Great spot for fringe by the sea. Great facilities for what's needed. Lovely hosts.

Disliked: Prob having camp neighbours as we are use to wild camping. Something we need to get use to I suppose.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Brilliant space to camp with a toddler. I was able to relax and watch her toddle as far as she wanted. Hardly any cars and it was an inclosed space so I could see her from the tent. I felt great knowing there wasn't any ponds she could fall in or anything for her to fall off. We loved having the ponies and donkeys right by. Just a short drive into Dunbar for swimming etc. Our designated space was plentiful and we didn't feel too squeezed in next to other campers. There was also a space down the bottom of the site that was empty, the kids could run around and play at.

Disliked: It was a very basic sight. There wasn't as much on offer as there is in big sights like a play park etc but it met our needs perfectly. None of tried out the porta-shower

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was so lovely. Cleanliness, location, surroundings, shower, toilets, communal shelter were all in order and maintained really well. Donna and Andrew were very friendly and accommodating to any needs that they could manage, we were all looked after very well! Donkeys, and the neigh-bours ponies were a big bonus, as well as the huge ash tree in the bottom field. Easy to access and find, with so many lovely places on your doorstep to see and visit. The train station is very handy down the way if you’re without a car too. Could not recommend to families and solo traveler's enough. Such an array of people coming and going. Hope to come back again 😊

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: What a find! Gorgeous site with beautiful views across East Lothian. Great location for exploring North Berwick and surrounding coastal towns and villages. Very handy to have a train station only 10 minute walk away. The Guy family were wonderful hosts - incredibly welcoming, friendly and helpful. My children particularly enjoyed helping to feed and groom Logan and Winston the donkeys each morning. The site was clean and tidy and pitches were clearly marked and very spacious. Portaloos were clean and maintained well. The electric shower was great, with plenty of hot water. The covered seating area and electric plug point were perfect for charging phones. Drinking water, sink area for cleaning dishes and onsite recycling all available. Felt very safe and secure and will definitely be back again. Thanks again to Donna for looking after us. Would definitely recommend. 🙂

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had the best weekend at Wamphray Croft! Donna and the family were absolutely amazing and super helpful, absolutely nothing was a bother to them. The donkeys were so cute and we loved stroking them and our dog loved sniffing them! The pitch was big and clean with no noise! The train line is so far back you could barely hear it and certainly wouldn’t keep you up. Very dog friendly and plenty of room to park next to your tent. Facilities were perfect and simple, just what you need! Clean toilets and a hot shower, a sink to wash dishes and a cold water tap. Thank you so much, we’ll definitely be back!

Disliked: We couldn’t fault a single thing :)

Local attractions

Golf mad? Play a round of golf on the hallowed greens of Muirfield, the links at Gullane Golf Club (both 10 minutes’ drive) or North Berwick (15 minutes). Otherwise grab the hiking boots and set out for Chesters Hill (five minutes); it’s an easy stroll and rewards with the remains of a prehistoric fort. Scramble up the landmark cone-shaped North Berwick Law for views over East Lothian and the Firth of Forth. If the kids (and any dogs) are pining for the beach, Aberlady Bay and Yellowcraig beach (both 10 minutes) are both canine-friendly and backed by dunes for a run around. Families can go wild on go-karts at East Links Family Park (20 minutes), or head to the Scottish Seabird Centre (15 minutes) to take boat trips out to Bass Rock. In need of a rainy day idea? Have a look at the vintage cars at Myreton Motor Museum, or book ahead to admire the sleek shape of Concorde at the National Museum of Flight Scotland (both five minutes). And how about this as handy, well-priced accommodation for the Edinburgh Festival or Fringe? It’s half an hour’s train journey into Edinburgh Waverley station from Drem (15 minutes’ walk).
