  • Peaceful site on a smallholding 10 minutes' drive from Dunbar
  • Close to lots of adventure activities; 25 mins' drive to North Berwick
  • Wild-style site with use of kitchen, barbecue and bathrooms
‘Off the beaten track’ is a phrase that’s somewhat overused – but here’s a place that really deserves that description. To get to the fabulously peaceful pitches at Pinkerton Hill you’ll need to make your way along a mile-long rough track (a four-wheel drive is recommended, and lifts are available if you need them). The rewards of navigating the track are plentiful – for starters, the pitches here are in a wonderful spot among woodlands with views out over the North Sea. They’ve got that quiet vibe of wild camping, but with the added bonus of a good collection of facilities: guests have use of a kitchen and a barbecue as well as a toilet, a shower and a wonderful outdoor bath where you can heat your water on the fire. The site is part of a Scottish smallholding where you’ll be able to say hello to the resident pigs, ponies and poultry along with a friendly Scottie dog. Being well away from urban life, it’s a particularly good spot for stargazing on clear nights. All of this gives Pinkerton Hill a real sense of remoteness – but in fact you won’t be far from civilisation when you want it. The site is only 10 minutes’ drive from Dunbar, which is well served with supermarkets, shops and places to eat. For days out, you can take your pick from adventure activities like coasteering and surfing or keep it more low key with nature walks, beach days, boat trips and castle visits. Edinburgh is about 40 minutes’ drive away for when you fancy some big-city time.
