  • Off-grid glamping cabin at a trout fishery near Dunfermline in Fife
  • A 15-minute drive to Loch Leven; 50 minutes to Edinburgh and Glasgow
  • Powered by solar panels, kitchen and private shower, fishing on site
Fishing in Fife? Why not? At Balmule Valley near Dunfermline, you can try your hand at casting for trout in the pond before retiring to your snug, couples-only cabin to cook up a feast with any fish you catch. The eco-credentials are pretty good here: the wooden cabin was hand-built on site using locally sourced and reclaimed materials wherever possible. It’s well insulated, off-grid and powered by solar panels, there’s filtered rain water for the shower in your private bathroom, and a woodburner will keep you toasty warm if the weather turns sour. The spacious living area comes complete with comfy furniture and a fireplace, as well as a kitchen corner for rustling up those fish suppers. After a day’s adventuring in Fife, you can cuddle up by the fire on a colder night – there’s no wifi and only an intermittent mobile service, so you’ve plenty of time to disconnect from your busy lifestyle and simply chill. On sunny days, move outside for smashing views over the trout lake from the decking – and the sunsets on clear evenings are just wonderful to behold.

Echo cabin

Liked: It was clean

Disliked: Poorly advertised with old photos. It has deteriorated massively since they were taken. Ugly half finished structures around it. Uncomfortable bed. Nobody knew we were coming and despite the owners best efforts it was just awful
