  • Secluded Isle of Mull site 25 minutes’ drive from Tobermory
  • Calgary Beach half an hour’s drive; Duart Castle 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with resident farm animals; close to woodland walks
The rugged landscapes of the Inner Hebrides are yours to explore from Crannich Campsite, a family- and dog-friendly spot on a working farm in the Aros Peninsula, the northern part of the Isle of Mull. For an added benefit, those landscapes come with assorted animal life, including resident Highland cattle, sheep and horses, red deer inhabiting the local forests and the white-tailed eagles, buzzards and hen harriers hovering high up in the skies. The pretty spectacular location in the middle of Glen Aros is another perk: think epic woodland walks, including the circular Cill An Ailean Trail (10 minutes’ drive), which takes you past the graveyards of a medieval chapel. There are more walking and cycling trails around Loch Frisa (20 minutes), plus fishing (with a permit) in the River Bellart. Oh, and you’ll be about 25 minutes’ drive from Tobermory, home of a renowned whisky distillery. The site feels blissfully secluded, and indeed it is – accessed via a private track away from the main road. The rural surroundings (with sweeping views of the glen) and the nicely spaced-out pitches contribute to creating a private and peaceful vibe. There is a toilet and shower block with hot water, plus a separate building with indoor washing-up areas and a drying room, not forgetting other amenities such as electric hook-ups and motorhome service points, plus charging and recycling facilities. If you fancy a barbecue, you can pick up supplies at the nearest shop in Salen (10 minutes), where there’s also a pub, a petrol station and a couple of cafés.

Electric gravel touring pitch (small)

Liked Lovely quiet site in a great location with well spaced pitches.
The washing up facilities were good and having a clothes line was useful.

Disliked Only 1 toilet, sink and shower.
A lot of midges so remember your repellent and hoods!

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Peaceful location. Shower was hot and powerful. The site was less than half full so quiet and cheapest on mull at the time. Near salen for shop. Peacocks. Red deer down near the forest

Disliked We were disappointed as the walks in the forest were at least a mile walk away to access. There were no highland cows. Not what we expected from the website. The environment here means lots of midges. Access has trees which need trimmed. Shower and toilet sheds are worn, and hadnt been cleaned for some time. Wifi was intermittent but still ok. The satellite TV system didnt have a signal, we tried it and another pitch and it didnt work, we didnt need tv, but it should still work as advertised. There were workers in the static caravans at the farm and they drove round past us at high speed spraying stones and laughing, they didnt need to use our road and should have been on their access so this was on purpose.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Really quiet spot and not busy - only a single shower and separate toilet but these were super clean.

Disliked Nothing i disliked about the site but I worry that with more people the single shower and separate toilet would not be sufficient. Also beware midges !

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (large)

Liked Pitches were well spaced and nicely laid out
Peaceful ish ( we were right by the road in, so had quite a bit of traffic noise.)

Disliked 1 unisex toilet and shower is not sufficient, no loo roll, peacock in the 'facilities' on arrival scared the s*** out of me and also it, by the amount of s*** everywhere.
We were right by the pond so had the only midge experience we had all holiday.
Bins were a long walk to the end of the drive; it would be considerate to your customers to provide an on site bin and more than 1 loo roll.

Shower was best I’ve used on a camping holiday plenty of hot water.

Local attractions

In addition to the Mull Aquarium, with its sustainable catch-and-release policy (residents are let go after four weeks), Tobermory is home to the Tobermory Distillery. This artisanal whisky distillery has been going for more than two centuries, and it runs guided tours and tastings. Lots of wildlife boat trips also set off from Tobermory Harbour. For a day at the seaside, head to Calgary Beach (half an hour’s drive), in a deep bay on the west coast of Mull. Just behind this vast expanse of white sand is Calgary Art in Nature, a woodland sculpture trail. Among its creations are a willow stag, a timber shark and a fairy house in the trunk of a tree. Overlooking the Sound of Mull from a rocky perch is the 14th-century Duart Castle (35 minutes). Check out the family portraits in the Great Hall before visiting the Clan Exhibition, which illustrates the link between the Maclean family (who built the castle) and the Scouting Association.
