  • Luxurious eco-bothies in ancient woodland in Cairngorms National Park
  • A 30-minute drive from Balmoral; 15 minutes from Aboyne
  • Wooden bothies with decking, barbecues and forest walks
Set in pine forest on a remote Scottish Highlands estate, Cairngorm Bothies are a collection of eco-friendly and luxurious wooden cabins. They’re designed so you can escape life’s little pressures and get completely off grid (by the way, 4G is available in case you can’t switch off completely). Friends, family and the dog – all are welcome to bothies made from eco-friendly, sustainable materials. Inside, there’s a choice of bed sizes, a spacious living area with dining table, and well-equipped mini-kitchen with all home comforts including a stove and fridge. And after a wander through centuries-old Blelack Forest, you can come back to bathrooms with welcoming walk-in showers and heated towel rails. Upping the eco-credentials, cabins are heated by wood-burning stove and powered by solar power whenever possible. Fire up the barbecue (they’re provided) on the decking … or enjoy a cosy night in by your wood-burning stove with firewood from the forest (logs included). Here’s your chance to embrace forest living. When you’re out and about on the forest trails, watch out for red squirrels and elusive deer – or look up to spot buzzards and kestrels circling above. Further afield, you can be on a golf course in 10 minutes, fish for salmon on the Dee river and ski in winter. And in spite of the site’s seclusion, you’re never far from handy shops if you need to pick up bits and pieces (Aboyne is 15 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions

Book a ghillie to fish in the best spots on the Dee in peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, or play a round of golf at Tarland (10 minutes). In winter, you can be on the slopes at The Lecht or Glenshee in less than an hour, and the dry slopes at family-friendly Alford Ski Centre (40 minutes) are open for skiing and tubing all year around. This area’s called Royal Deeside for a reason. Up the cultural mix a bit by pretending to be royal for the day with guided tours of Balmoral Castle (30 minutes’ drive), or take the kids to explore pink-hued, fairy-tale Craigievar Castle (20 minutes), once a favourite haunt of Queen Victoria. You might like to sample artisan Scottish cuisine at farms and distilleries on Deeside road trips. Stop off at Royal Lochnagar Distillery (30 minutes) to sample a few drams of single malt, or head to Banchory (35 minutes) and browse local cheeses or haggis at the farmers’ market (third Saturday of the month).
