  • Well-kept Wiltshire site 10 minutes’ walk from Lacock village centre
  • A half-hour drive to Bath; 45 minutes to Stonehenge and Longleat
  • Dog-friendly pitches with a playground and dedicated ball games area
What’s on your wishlist for a Wiltshire outdoor break? A peaceful location? Easy access from a main road? A village close by so you can easily walk to a pub and shop? Somewhere family friendly that also accepts dogs? If you said ‘yes’ to any – or indeed all – of the above, you’ll most likely be rather taken with Piccadilly Caravan Park, in a rural spot 10 minutes’ walk from the National Trust village of Lacock. That handy position means you’ll have several lovely pubs and independent shops close by. As well as being handily within reach of all that, the park is only a little way off the A350, putting it in a good position for getting out and about to explore the rest of what Wiltshire (and beyond) has to offer. Day trips to Bath and Longleat are easily doable in less than 45 minutes’ drive, and there are all sorts of walks and bike rides to be enjoyed locally. Around the site’s well-kept grounds are hedges for privacy and a good collection of facilities, including picnic areas, a small playground and a designated games field where the kids can have a run around. Dogs, too, have a dedicated exercise area where they can stretch their paws properly. Showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette are also part of the picture, and the team here pride itself on keeping the facilities clean and the grounds in excellent shape.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Visit family in this area regularly but my usual campsite was full so came here. Great location, just outside lovely Lacock and not far from the river. Facilities good and very clean. Reasonable value.

Disliked: Seems to attract large motorhomes with large awnings plus large windbreaked dining areas! - so overall impression was that the site is crammed, though in fact for a small campervan like mine, the pitch was plenty big enough. Lots of rules and regs but not the quiet site I'd hoped for. People sat out chatting til late, traffic noise and also heavy bass music til 11pm coming from nearby (pub perhaps?) on Friday night (the latter not the site's fault but that didn't help me sleep!). Have to pay for WiFi. No temperature control on the showers - wanted a cold one as weather was roasting!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This was a fantastic campsite. I take my two children and our dog on my own so like to be somewhere my children have the space to run around together but in my line of sight as I setup. I was given a great pitch that was near enough to the park that my children could come and go from it safely, and I could see them at all times.

The upkeep of the site is beautiful, lovely plants, a decent size dog walk area and field to play ball games.

The new toilet and shower block was clean and tidy too but handy that the old one open for the toilets when camping nearer those than the new ones.

Disliked: The new showers, whilst clean, tidy and really a lovely set up for a campsite were too hot for my children's skin and you're unable to adjust the temperature.

There is just one family bathroom, I waited for a while for it to become free but my children were tired so we went into the female shower block together. My eldest has autism and he really struggled with the temperature of the water hurting his skin but needed to shower having spent much of the day led in a stream down in Lacock.

I wasn't able to ask staff as it was late and we were all in a cubicle just having to get on with the situation as best as possible. It would be great if the showers could just be set as two hotter/two cooler and labelled on the doors as such for people's preferences. I always find anywhere with push button showers they tend to either be scalding or like an ice bath, so it's a real shame they're not adjustable.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Lovely and clean site. All the facilities are kept very clean.
Close to laycock village which is lovely and worth a visit.
Would recommend the site.

Disliked: Our pitch (17) was next to the toilet block, not such a problem as hidden by a bush, however, the hand dryer is very loud and the door to the block is continuously left open so sounds even louder.
I did speak to the owner who explained they are louder them they expected and are looking at getting self closing doors to quieten the sound. I believe this would help a lot.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: This was our second stay at piccadilly and we had a wonderful time. Just the perfect amount of activity for the children (7 & 9) - not too much & not too quiet. The recent referb of the shower blocks is stunning & love the addition of family/disabled shower and toilet. Felt like a spa experience! Immaculate camping park from the grounds to the toilets & and washing up facilities. Wardens were on hand for any questions & very friendly. Already looking at the diary to see when we can return. Handy to have washing machine & tumble dryer facilities also.

Local attractions

As well as centuries-old traditional pubs and several jewellery or design shops, Lacock is home to a beautifully restored tithe barn dating from c.1230. On the outskirts of this gorgeous National Trust-owned village is an 800-year-old abbey that’s had starring roles in both Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films; the Fox Talbot photography museum is set in the abbey grounds. Other big-hitting attractions in this corner of Wiltshire include the magical Avebury Stone Circles, which link to a mysterious man-made mound at Silbury Hill (both half an hour’s drive). From there, you can continue the prehistoric theme with a visit to spectacular Stonehenge (45 minutes) and its interactive visitor centre. Coming more up to date, Caen Hill Locks (20 minutes) on the Kennet and Avon Canal comprise 29 locks rising 237 feet over two miles and were designed by engineer John Rennie in 1810. There are golf courses and events galore held at Bowood House and Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), while picture-perfect Castle Combe (20 minutes) has repeatedly been voted one of the prettiest villages in the UK.
