Field 725 Eco Camping and Glamping: Bell tents

General

  • Peaceful site on a large estate 10 minutes' drive from Frome
  • Within half an hour of Longleat, Wookey Hole, Glastonbury and Bath
  • Camp kitchen, café and barbecues or firepits to hire

The arts and culture hotspot of Bruton to the south and the market town amenities of Frome a couple of miles in the other direction… this is a splendid spot for a Somerset stay.

Field 725 Eco Camping and Glamping is a family-friendly site in the grounds of Redwood Rare Breeds Farm Park, and within easy reach of loads of local activities and attractions – Bath, Wells or Glastonbury are all about half an hour away, as are Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole and Longleat. Should you wish to plot your next adventures in a pub, a 17th-century inn is in the village of Nunney, five minutes’ drive away (or an hour on foot for the energetic).

Back at base, there’s lots of lovely space for running about/chilling out (delete as appropriate), and kit to borrow for games of cricket and swingball. Barbecues and firepits are available to rent for open-air evenings, and there’s a covered camp kitchen in case of damp days. The little on-site café is open through the summer for hot drinks and enticing breakfast crepes.

Friendly and relaxed atmosphere, festival vibe, staff very helpful, lots of space, a communal tent with some games, sofas and plugs to charge your electric gadgets. Compost toilets were clean and there was no odor at all. Showers with hot water and a station to do your washing up. Great spot for your day out trips to Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Bath etc.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to complain about really.

Bush craft that was available. Rural aspect. Variety of chickens. Allowed camp fires. Compost lavatories, very effective and didn’t smell. Would be better if there were windows so possible to enjoy the view while seated!

    Disliked:

Showers did not work well, could only get them luke warm. On the upside they were clean snd apart from water temp, very pleasant.

Needs investment in facilities - terrific idea but execution issues08/09/2021

The location is brilliant, nice flat field, terrific views over the countryside and the colleagues onsite were very friendly. The Eco-concept is superb. Please note - it has moved from the location noted on the Pitchup website. Field 725 campsite has moved from its original home on the outskirts of Frome to a new hilltop setting in Wanstrow between Frome and Bruton.

    Disliked:

They may have just had an unlucky week- constant problems with toilets blocking and being out of action, cold water in showers and for washing dishes. The toilets and showers felt ramshackle and either second hand kit that was very tired or rather weak in construction. Activities were cancelled without much notice and on one evening the staff seemed to have friends over for a..... merry.... party that was still going at daylight.

There is a large communal tented seating area which is a brilliant idea but was full of broken games and toys and torn furniture.

This isn't to do with eco its to do with poor maintenance and lack of management unfortunately.

The showers were funky and hot. The views were amazing and hiring a firepit was easy, good value and a lovely thing to do. The pizza cafe on Saturday night made yummy pizzas too, some take away deliver too (at the bottom of the hill!)

    Disliked:

Note the photos on this listing are of Field725 at their previous location, which wasn't too obvious to us on booking. We camped while the site was still getting established, so there were a few things still a little rudimentary, and we weren't quite sure of reception times to ask questions.

It's more of a glamping site that might attract group bookings (we were there with a wedding and hen do), so if you are happy with that kind of vibe, then go for it. Of course it depends on who is booked to stay - you might have a totally different experience.

The road up to the top of the hill is steep - you just need to be in low gear and give your car some welly!

The Somerset views and it was a quiet site for young children

    Disliked:

The pitch grass was knee length and therefore we had to try and pitch on this. This should have been cut even if just where the tent needed to go.
The toilets were not plumbed correctly and the waste kept coming up back into the toilets.
The website had said there were facilities on the site such as a coffee cart, which pitch up showed in a photograph but that didn’t exist.

Nice rural location, basic amenities which is what I guess it the eco side of the accommodation.

    Disliked:

Felt it wasn’t made for accommodating children as didn’t have much for children to do or a play area which was designated for kids but was over grown and full of stinger nettles. Rough road on the way up - luckily I have a suv to get up, saw a few smaller cars getting stuck trying to get up the hill!

Local attractions

Active types can stride forth from the site to walk to local villages including Mells and Nunney, climb Cley Hill or ramble along the Colliers Way; if you're a cyclist, pedal your way along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath (all the way to Bath if you’re feeling fit). Facilities are nearby for horse riding, rock climbing, fishing and archery.

For town times, the site's around a half-hour drive from medieval Wells, UNESCO-listed Bath and Arthurian Glastonbury. The Somerset Rural Life Museum is the place to soak up a bit more local history, and there are vintage vehicles aplenty on show at the Haynes International Motor Museum and on the heritage line at East Somerset Railway.

Other days out locally include Stourhead National Trust estate, the six-mile safari driving trail at Longleat, the show caves at Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge (England’s largest gorge at three miles long, fact fiends).
