Looking to slope off to Somerset for a bit of R&R with your beloved? Beneath the Chestnut at Coleford might fit the bill very nicely – it’s tucked away in a corner of a peaceful Somerset meadow, with accommodation in a well-designed, adults-only shepherd’s hut surrounded by ancient woodland.
Inside, the hut has a double bed, TV, woodburning stove, ensuite shower room and everything you need for a comfortable stay in a luxurious living space. Cooking is done outside outside on a gas barbecue, in a private garden planted with flowers and herbs. You can also soak in the woodfired roll-top bath (give it around an hour to warm up), which makes a top spot for watching the sunset – on clear nights, the lack of light pollution makes stargazing a must.
Wildlife is a big part of life on site. Go quietly about your business and you may see hares scooting across the meadow, deer grazing and buzzards circling overhead. Owls, hedgehogs and seasonal swallows are all visitors too, and as alpacas and sheep live in neighbouring paddocks, you’ll rarely be without animal company.
Although Beneath the Chestnut feels miles from anywhere, pubs, a farm shop and village stores are just a few minutes away by car, with Frome, Wells and Glastonbury making great days out. However, as this is very much rural Somerset, a car is essential to make the most of your stay.

Local attractions
If you’re keen to get out exploring Somerset on foot or by bike, there are plenty of countryside routes within a short trip by car. You can stroll around the periphery of Chew Valley Lake or explore the Stanton Drew Circles and Cove (both half an hour’s drive), and for longer hikes or bike rides with spectacular views, head for the Mendip Hills National Landscape (25 minutes) – while more testing trails can be found in the limestone landscapes of Cheddar Gorge (35 minutes).
The historic city of Wells (25 minutes) offers up a spectacular Gothic-era cathedral and 13th-century moated Bishop’s Place as well as indie shops and markets on Wednesday and Saturday. Browse boutiques in Glastonbury (40 minutes) for handmade jewellery and watercolours of Glastonbury Tor (35 minutes), which you can climb for far-reaching views over the Somerset Levels.
The market town of Frome (15 minutes) is known for its artisan shop and lots of art galleries thanks to its thriving cultural scene. You can also spend a day discovering the backstory of Bath (35 minutes) on outdoors of The Roman Baths, or soaking up the spring waters at Thermae Bath Spa.
