Home Farm: The Pig Sty

General

  • Smallholding with views over Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 30 to Wells and Weston-super-Mare
  • Half a mile from the village pub and 1.5 miles from a golf course

This Somerset smallholding comes with three major perks. One: it's just south of the Mendips, meaning you can head out for hillside strolls whenever the mood takes you. Two: as befits a farm in this rural neck of the woods, there are all sorts of entertaining animals like pigs, sheep, a horse, chickens and ducks. Three? It's got to be that logburning stove…

Home Farm's family-friendly accommodation is in the small village of Clewer, roughly five minutes' drive from Cheddar town. This part of the world is particularly well set up for fans of adventure sports – as well as the crags and caves of Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes), this place has easy access to a watersports centre (10 minutes) and paintball course (30 minutes). Lower-adrenaline (but equally enjoyable) attractions include the historic city of Wells and the beaches at Weston-super-Mare (both 30 minutes). Pretty neat, huh?

This green and hilly part of Somerset also has some top views to its name (gazing out over Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips as the sun goes down being a particular highlight). If all that scenery has you in the mood for outdoor eats, feel free to fire up a barbecue and get those skewers sizzling (stroll 20 minutes down the road to Hectors Farm Shop for fresh meat and veg). For a post-dinner treat, make your way over to the open fire and local ales on tap at the village pub (10 minutes' walk).

The inside of the toilets and showers were very modern and clean. It felt like an actual bathroom.

    Disliked:

50p for the shower. I was not prepared for this, not sure if it was written on the Web page and I missed it. The passing traffic on the near by road was quite busy and loud.

From the manager...

Thanks for staying here.
Iam sorry that you were unaware of 50p for the shower, we send out pre arrival notes to all guests, clearly this didn't find its way to your inbox.

The site, was peaceful, spacious and clean. The facilities were fab. Shower and toilets clean to a high standard. Washing up area to the side. Loved the animals on the farm. The children were allowed to help collect eggs, feed the ducks and pet the pigs. Just a great site, with great owners. Pitches a fab size.

    Disliked:

Consider a cover for the wash up area.

From the manager...

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you had a good time and enjoyed our site.

We will be looking at ways to improve the site for our guests in time for next season, including a covered/ lit wash up area.

Home Farm was a lovely place to stay, very peaceful, great views out to the farm fields around, lots of local walks and villages to visit. Perfect location for Cheddar Gorge. The Shepherd's hut was furnished out with great care and attention to every detail and had everything for self-catering. There are lots of optional extras such as bbq/breakfast packs with meat from local suppliers, fire pits to rent etc and all the huts have log burners and ample supply of wood, meaning they would be great in winter too. BBQ provided at the huts which was a bonus. The owners are willing to go over and above to help with anything, however small, from local walk suggestions to firewood. The camping field also looks nice and features chickens, pigs, ducks and sheep. I came for a part-working break and needed both scenery and reliable wi-fi/electricity and got all of that!

All of the farm was fabulous - the children were able to collect fresh chicken’s eggs, feed the pigs snd ducks and roam with the sheep. It was a perfect camping trip. Steve was very friendly, helpful and made great suggestions on local venues. So great to be able to watch he stars and see owls and bats flying by. We had a great time, and will definitely be booking again. The shepherd’s hut toilets and shower facilities were excellent and very clean.

    Disliked:

Only two toilets in with the shower units, so did have to queue occasionally.

From the manager...

Thanks for staying with us and pleased you had a good time.
We are closing the campsite for this season on 6th September and will then look at the valued feedback and make changes for next year, including adding more toilets.

Local attractions

After a couple of hours gaping at/taking photos of/climbing on Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes' drive) and exploring the caverns next door (also 10 minutes), more geological goodies lie in wait to Wookey Hole (20 minutes), an impressive cave complex with an underground river (parts are so spooky that the Doctor Who film crew used it as a backdrop for alien invasion).

Twitchers and walkers, meanwhile, may prefer to stick above ground and mosey around Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (20 minutes). Bonus birdlife can be spotted at official RSPB sites like Ham Wall (20 minutes) and Greylake (30 minutes).

All that sitting still may not suit younger tots, of course. If that's the case, sling a bucket and spade in the boot and head to Weston-super-Mare’s beaches (30 minutes), stroll the cobbled streets of Wells (30 minutes) or make for Bath (an hour) and play dress-up at the Jane Austen Museum. Older kids (in suitably old clothes…) can be treated to action-packed outdoor adventure at Bristol Paintball (30 minutes) or Cheddar Watersports (10 minutes).

Must see

  • Cheddar Caves & Gorge (3.9 kilometres)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (9.6 kilometres)

  • King John's Hunting Lodge (3.7 kilometres)
