Butcombe New Woods: Hilltop clearing is our one and only camping pitch

General

  • Exclusive-use rural site on five acres of new woodland
  • In the Mendip Hills, half an hour's drive from Bristol
  • Wild site with firepit, toilet and shower; lake 300 metres away

You want space? You’ll certainly get that at Butcombe New Woods – five acres of it, in fact (or 4.53 football fields, if that’s easier to imagine). And you’ll have it all to yourselves too, as this site half an hour’s drive from Bristol is only let to one group at a time.

Around that huge amount of space is a native woodland that was planted by the owner (in conjunction with the Woodland Trust) back in 2015 – the trees and wildflowers are growing well now and have become a haven for wildlife like deer, badgers, rabbits and all sorts of birds. Three sides of the site are flanked by farm fields, with the fourth looking out over a wooded valley and a stream that leads to Blagdon Lake about 300 metres away.

The pitching space has been set up in a large south-facing clearing that’s been kitted out with a sink, a compost toilet and a cold shower, plus a firepit that’s supplied with a sack of firewood. This is essentially a wild camping experience so there’s no electricity but some solar lighting is provided to help you find your way.

This site is for tents only, with no vehicles allowed on site. There’s parking just outside the entrance, with a 60-metre walk down to the pitch area (largely level but with one gentle slope) – wheelbarrows are on hand to help you haul your kit down there.

Please note

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Not five acres, a small clearing and a large slope.07/20/2021

Having the small clearing to ourselves was great, we were a group of 10 and booked something like this as we like to have a drink and play music. The compost toilets were good, plenty of spare buckets, saw dust and toilet roll was supplied too which was a nice touch. The sink area is very clever. There was recycling boxes and a bin provided. The shower was powerful and was very much welcomed as we were there during the hottest weekend of July. My cousin had 5 showers a day, she loved it that much thinking she was a celebrity in the jungle.

    Disliked:

On arrival we were approached by a man from the field next to us to tell us how to park, he made it clear that we couldn’t park in front of the gate, however we had already been informed of this and parked no where near it. About an hour later another of our party arrived and he approached them again with the same information. It was like he didn’t want us there.
The walk from the main gate to the site was very over grown, we were stung by nettles and cut by the brambles, we found a stick and chopped what we could down.
The description states 5 acres of land to yourself, it’s actually a small clearing on a slope, we had to place wood under our tables to allow us to cook and place our drinks down without them tipping, several glasses were broken.
we all woke in the night as we were sliding out of bed, it was difficult to sit together as a group as we had to place our chairs carefully so they didn’t tip. One of the party actually sustained an injury from falling off his chair when it tipped. The slope is not “slight” as described.
On our first night at 10.45 we received a phone call to say we needed to keep the noise down, we only booked something to ourselves to allow us to be louder than would be allowed on a campsite. Be wary if you have dogs of leads a member of our party got two ticks from the long grass.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback. I wish you'd let us know at the time about the problems with the agricultural contractors making hay in the neighbouring field, I could have spoken to their boss. There's never been a problem before and the hay is done for this year now so it won't be a concern again.
You have 5 acres of new woodland to yourself, with the one clearing for tents. Much of the rest of the woodland is unsuitable for camping, due sloping ground and trees. This is the main reason why we limit camping to a single group of a limited size.
I'm sorry that we had to call you about the noise after complaints from a neighbouring farm shortly before 11pm. The booking conditions on PitchUp are very clear "Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume". Thanks for turning it down.

We really enjoyed our stay at Butcombe New Woods. The site is exactly as it is described. The compost loo, cold shower and sink area all worked really well. The setting is beautiful with views of Bladgon Lake and easy access to good walks. The site is on a slope which is a slight downside but we were aware of this when booking.

Very quiet which was surprising as we were so close to the airport. Some lovely surrounding walks, close to seaside towns + shops and the Thatchers factory. Fire pit, some fire wood, sink, bins, toilet and shower included. Lovely view and surrounded by fields of grapes and a gorgeous lake.

    Disliked:

Would have benefited from a few more instructions on when to empty the compost toilet (such as a fill line on the toilet itself). Would recommend telling future campers to bring a windbreak as when the weather is bad you are exposed to the elements. A little more of a slope than we anticipated but as long as you pitch in the right place you wouldn’t necessarily notice.

From the manager...

Thanks for the feedback, I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay and made the most of the surrounding areas.
I'll mark a full line on the compost toilets with some white tape to make it clearer. You don't need to empty them though, just switch to a fresh bin. It's really helpful to get practical feedback like this.

The area, really peaceful. The shower was especially liked. Loved camping on our own with dogs able to be off lead and have camp fires.

    Disliked:

slightly sloping but ok. Would be good to have designated fire pit made with stones.

From the manager...

Thanks for the positive feedback.we though hard about the fire pit design, we settled on the half beer keg because it keeps the fire bit off the ground to reduce damage to the grass.

We had the whole site to ourselves - perfect as we were meeting family who were still a little wary of busy places.
Great to have a firepit and wood provided and plenty of space for the bbq we brought.
Lots of space for the kids to run about without bothering anyone.
Perfect location to walk to Blagdon Lake, which is beautiful. Very quiet location. Great that wheelbarrows are provided for the short walk down from the car. Everything was exactly as described.

    Disliked:

A bit slopey - we kept finding the kids had slid out of bed
Shower was entirely exposed - you can see into it from the kitchen area

    Lots of wildlife to see.

Nothing really just very minor things ! We really enjoyed it.

The description did not mention that there was a slope- it wasn’t a massive deal for2 nights however it might be an issue for some people

It would be good if there was a dedicated area for a camp fire with maybe some stones around it?

The description did not mention that the fire pit didn’t have a grill again not an issue for us but maybe for some if they are planning on using it for cooking

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback, I'm pleased you enjoyed the weekend (despite a bit of rain!).
I'll certainly sort out a grill for the fire pit, I've been expecting people to use it for a campfire rather than for cooking but I have a grill which I'll put there for the next arrivals.

Local attractions

If the five acres isn’t sufficient for your planned roaming, don’t worry – there’s plenty more fab countryside nearby. The site is within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a short amble from Blagdon Lake and with access to a network of footpaths to wander along.

For a slightly different perspective on your rural surrounds, join horse riding outings (15 minutes’ drive), head out for a game of golf (20 minutes) or don your hard hat to head underground at Wookey Hole caves (25 minutes). The pretty Yeo Valley gardens (10 minutes) and the vineyards of Aldwick Estate (five minutes) are good spots if you’re after something low-paced.

And there’s plenty of variety beyond that too: check out Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) for some stunning scenery (and tasty cheese), head to Bristol (half an hour) for city wanderings, or get your bucket and spade ready for a seaside day in Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes).
