Entrance to site

  • Dog-friendly family-run site near the coast in Exmoor National Park
  • Five minutes' drive to Minehead town centre; Dunster Castle 15 minutes
  • Sea views on site; access to woodland, moorland and coast walks
A sea-view stay within a national park – sounds a bit like a double winner, doesn't it? These twin attractions are part of the deal at Moor Wood Campsite, in the fabulous Exmoor National Park about a mile and a half from the centre of Minehead. This peaceful four-acre site is family-run and filled with history, in this very special part of Somerset. The hilltop location means that guests will have excellent views over Minehead and out across the Bristol Channel in one direction and over the Quantock Hills in the other. Being located within Exmoor also means that it's part of an International Dark Sky Reserve, so you can expect the views to be just as good by night (clouds permitting, of course). Being so close to Minehead (five minutes’ drive) has real benefits as you’ll be able to head into town easily for things like shops, pubs, attractions and days on the lovely sandy beach. This is still a proper rural location though, with direct access to woodland and moorland for walks. The gorgeous South West Coast Path (aka the Salt Path) is very easy to get to as well. Facilities at this site are simple but well kept – there are clean toilets and showers for men and women, along with a washing-up room, a drive-over grey waste disposal point and a rubbish/recycling area. There's a laidback atmosphere here, with kids and dogs welcome; you'll just need to keep dogs on a two-metre lead. Barbecues and firepits are also permitted as long as they're kept off the ground.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Friendly welcome on arrival.
Stunning views - best I've seen for along time.
Site wardens were visible during the day checking around the site which was spotless.
Facilities were clean.

Disliked Not a dislike but just to be mindful. To have such fantastic views means the site is up high so there is a 1hr ish slow walk down and then back up from Minehead.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely, friendly people. Well maintained, plenty of different options, with amazing view, or alternatively shady spots, which I used as it was incredibly hot when I was there.

The advantage to that being I had visits not only from the rabbit family and lots of birds, but also a lovely shrew came wandering around me while I was sat in my seat.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Amazing views. Spacious pitches, we had the electric hardstanding, clean tidy easy to hook up. Toilets and showers where always immaculate, as was the waste disposal area. Walks are amazing from the camp, footpaths easy to access, some amazing views up the hill, wild exmoor ponies, cows, forest and views over the sea. Minehead is a lovely town, great shops, pubs, restaurants just a short walk or drive from camp. Owners are super friendly and really hard working. Honey we purchased in the office was the best ever. We will definitely be back next year. This is the best camp we have been too so far, didn't want to leave!!

Local attractions

Having Minehead (five minutes’ drive) so close by is really handy – head into town for a day on the sandy beach, some time riding the slides of Splash Waterworld or a nostalgic trip on the West Somerset Railway. Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to try watersports and other adventures in Porlock Weir (15 minutes) or head along to Lynmouth (40 minutes) to ride the cliff railway. Being within Exmoor National Park of course also means lots of great walks – a couple of the favourite routes nearby include the Tall Trees Trail (15 minutes) and the climb up Dunkery Beacon (20 minutes). The Valley of Rocks walk and Tarr Steps trail are both about 40 minutes away, as is Wimbleball Lake, a hotspot for various watersports. For more family days out, you might like to try places like Tropiquaria Zoo (20 minutes) and the Exmoor Pony Centre (45 minutes) or head to Dunster Castle (15 minutes), which has child-friendly activities as well as guided tours of the ancient castle and working watermill.
