Haselbury Mill: Sheperds Hut

General

  • Retro glamping units in a peaceful riverside glade near Crewkerne
  • Half an hour's drive from Glastonbury and the Jurassic Coast
  • On a 14-acre historic estate with pub and restaurant

Seeking a serene Somerset stay? Have a hassle-free hol at Haselbury Mill, on a cracking 14-acre estate five minutes from Crewkerne.

This is a place with quite a chunk of history behind it – the original buildings date all the way back (way, way back) to the times of William the Conqueror. The glamping units, in a gorgeous little glade by the Parrett river, are from days of yore too (although they’re very much of the vintage variety rather than the ancient).

The wagons here are traditional numbers, collected in a quiet corner and cleverly restored to hang on to the best of their retro features while upping the comfort factor by throwing in some modern bits and bobs, including tea and coffee making facilities (vital for those who simply can’t function until they’ve had their morning cuppa.) Smart modern toilet and shower facilities are housed in another wagon parked up in the same spacious clearing.

Need more than a cup of tea to get you going of a morning? Sorted: a generous breakfast is provided for all glamping guests, and served up a short walk away in the main mill. With any luck that’ll see you through your days out (hiking, beachcombing or gadding about in Glastonbury, perhaps) until it’s time to come back and settle in once again for evening drinks and a meal.

Bag a table by the lakeside restaurant’s glass wall for dinner with a view, or potter over to the site’s pub for woodfired pizzas and pies to accompany pints of local ale or cider.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The shepherd's hut is not recommended for people above 5'8" because the width of the hut restricts the length of the bed.

Lovely location, quiet and ideal for exploring Somerset or getting down to the Dorset coast. Loads of room for kids and dog to run about and the accommodation (wagon) was roomy, comfy and had a great shower! Buffet breakfast also ideal for hungry kids and very dog friendly. Don’t forget to book and have pizzas on Friday/Saturday evening!

    Disliked:

Understandably but bit chilly in the morning (radiators and electric fire are included though) and you get condensation on the windows

The pizza, sorry but they need less topping and mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese should not be on a pizza.

Everything, the accommodation was amazing and the facilities were fantastic. We stayed in the retro caravan and it was beautiful we were away from the main house, but it was only a short walk away to the bar and food. Would definitely go back either as a couple, family or with friends perfect for any group. Really amazing stay and really great value for the money. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Very quaint and Bijou, managed to have 6 people standing room only in for a coffee! Price includes that of a Full Breakfast and yes you do need to be below 5'8". You can park almost opposite so useful for arriving and leaving any items in the car to keep space in the Hut. Was warm and clean with Tea/Coffee making facilities and very friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Be aware that this is across the lane, and short walk (5-10mins) to the main building/windy miller for meals so have coat/umbrella/walking boots or wellies

I liked the quirkiness of the hut. It was small but cosy and had everything that we needed for our short stay. The facilities at the mill were just perfect, and an unexpected surprise. We were able to spend the weekend with our dog and take her for dinner and breakfast with us. I would definitely recommend staying at Haselbury Mill and would definitely be interested in going back.

The Mill and the area was well positioned for visiting places of interest. The Mill was nice and the breakfast very tasty with helpful friendly staff.

    Disliked:

The shepherds hut which we stayed in was sited next to quite a noisy road so although we were in the countryside next to a stream it was spoiled by the sound of constant vehicles passing speedily along the road.

Local attractions

Inspired by all the bits of the past on display around the estate? There’s plenty more nearby. On a rather grander scale than your digs (fab though they are) are the smart stately homes of Montacute House, a Tudor pile with gorgeous formal gardens (15 minutes’ drive) and Barrington Court, home to a walled garden and orchard (20 minutes).

Orchards are a fairly common sight around these parts, and their offerings go towards creating the famed Somerset cider. Sample a sip or several at Burrow Hill Cider (20 minutes) – they’ve been pressing the stuff for more than 200 years so they know a thing or two. If you fancy a snifter of something stronger, their cider brandy is worth trying too.

Burrow further back in history with a trip to Glastonbury Tor (half an hour) to hear tales of King Arthur and Excalibur; or delve into the age of the dinosaurs down at the Jurassic Coast. Charmouth beach (half an hour) still harbours ancient fossils, for those who know where to look (and that’d be in the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre if you’re not lucky with seeking out your own).
