  • Small and friendly adults-only site near Cheddar Gorge in Somerset
  • A 10-minute drive to Wookey Hole Caves; 45 minutes to Bath
  • On a bus route to Cheddar and Wells; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
If tiny sites and a peaceful kid-free vibe are the things that have you stoked on holiday, you'll like The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park, a small, flower-filled and friendly site with Mendip Hills views and near Cheddar in Somerset. On site, pitches are lined by neat hedgerows to up your privacy stakes and there’s room to park your cars too. A handy, contemporary bathroom block is out by the pitches too, with toilets and showers. For cooking up a feast on site, barbecues and self-contained firepits are permitted, and you can stock up on goodies for the grill at the basics store in Draycott village (five minutes’ drive). The site is not far from Cheddar and the ancient city of Wells; if you fancy having a pint in a pub at either place, leave your car at base camp and take the bus running to both that leaves from the stop nearby. The Rodney Stoke site welcomes dogs as long as they're well-behaved, but no humans under 16, please.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked What a Lovely campsite!!! Easy to find as its located at the back of the Rodney Stoke inn (which is a must to pop in and have something to eat).
We were greated by Geoff, the new owner, who was very friendly and welcoming we then chose our pitch. We had one of the hard standing pitches which wasn't quite level. Geoff came along to check everything was ok and once explained he went off and got us a set of levellers to borrow for our stay! He also gifted us 20 pence pieces for the showers as this is something he is going to try and scrap in the new year to make having a shower free of charge. We were very grateful.
The site was lovely and quiet with beautiful views and countryside around. Right at the back of the campsite is a gate which leads you onto the strawberry field trail. Lovely walk for us and our pooch and you can walk to the next village which is not far at all.
Overall we had a lovely couple of days over New Year, explored Wells and Glastonbury with both being a short drive to get to. The Rodney Stoke Inn kept us watered and fed serving food all day which was just brilliant as our intentions of cooking outside soon disappeared with the -2 degree temperatures!!! We loved our stay and a massive big thankyou to the owners for putting the heating on in the (very) nice shower and toilet blocks!!!!! Ourselves and other campers all commented on this gesture as a godsend which made using the facilities a joy!!!
Thankyou Rodney Stoke campsite for everything that made our stay just perfect and we are really looking forward to visiting again when you reopen!!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Very peaceful site with great views & a great welcome from the manager... We were the 1st to arrive & had the choice of the pitches, so we chose pitch 10 in the corner. The place was immaculate, amazing clean & warm shower/toilet blocks.. The pub was very welcoming although quite pricey for drinks.

Disliked Having to pay for a very low powered & bearly warm shower which you still have to press the big button to get to work. There was no information about how long 20p lasted so put 40p in & the meter was still showing 19.46 when I finished, (not sure if this is minutes & seconds left.) So im guessing the next person had a free shower after me.... Its the first time we have come across this system.

Route directions

The site is at the bottom of the car park for the Rodney Stoke Inn. Customers with caravans and motorhomes are advised not to let a satnav direct you down New Road (which leads from the gliding club to the bottom of Draycott village), as this road is dangerous for large vehicles and towed units and it is likely to cause damage to your vehicle. Instead it is better to approach on the main road from either Axbridge or Wells.

Local attractions

Smashing Cheddar (10 minutes’ drive) offers up its gorge for climbing and caves for exploring as well as cheese- and cider-tasting opportunities. Wookey Hole Caves (both 10 minutes) have more subterranean caverns and a dinosaur-themed walk. If you’d rather pursue a more sedate pastime, golfing is close by at the Isle of Wedmore (15 minutes) and Mendip Springs (25 minutes) golf clubs, or you can try crazy golf at Cheddar too. The seaside town of Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes) makes a popular day trip for a romp through local history at the Weston Museum, a poke around the Helicopter Museum and a stroll down the Grand Pier, or you can board a paddle steamer for a cruise along the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. Fans of city-based doings can easily get to the buzzy quayside restaurants and indie shopping scene of Bristol (50 minutes) – while heritage devotees should head for Bath (45 minutes) for its renowned Thermae Bath Spa, remains of Roman baths, the Jane Austen Centre and year-round festivals.
