General

  • Dog-friendly site on an old Victorian farm in the Polden Hills
  • A 25-minute drive to Glastonbury Tor; 35 minutes to Cheddar Gorge
  • On-site café, gym, swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and farm animals

A place to stay in the Polden Hills among alpacas, pygmy goats, chickens and donkeys? If the sound of staying on an old Victorian farm in Somerset tickles your fancy, then map out your route to West House Farm, a dog-friendly site 25 minutes’ drive away from Glastonbury Tor. Once a working farm, the site still has a splash of farm life, as it's home to friendly farm animals ready to welcome you in.

If splendid views are on your checklist, this is a super spot for you – West House Farm looks out over the Somerset Levels and the Mendip Hills (45 minutes’ drive for its limestone peaks and lakes). It’s easy to spot the coast from here too, as the beaches of Burnham-On-Sea (20 minutes’ drive) and Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes’ drive) are well within reach.

After a little bit of comfort in with a rural retreat? Conveniently, this site has lots of places to unwind, whether it’s getting yourself a new do in the hair salon, rejuvenating your muscles in the hot tub and sauna or breaking a sweat in the on-site gym.

Fans of fitness (or some idle doggy paddling) may want to spend time in the outdoor swimming pool. Handily, there are changing rooms with hot showers to rinse off afterwards and an on-site café to replenish any wavering energy stores after all the activities. A unisex toilet is available 24 hours a day, but please note that shower access is restricted to gym opening times (6.30am-9.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm Saturday and Sunday).

If you’re missing anything from your luggage, there’s a food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site. Plus, in Bridgwater (a historic market town, 15 minutes’ drive away), it’s rather straightforward to hunt down some exciting places to eat out.

Clean facilities and a nice quiet location

    Disliked:

One of the selling points is the hot tub and pool but no mention was made on arrival as to whether these facilities were available.

Nowhere to wash up pots. No handy pub serving food.

From the manager...

Hi Helen,

Thanks for coming to stay, we enjoyed having you here. I am sorry that you didn’t get to use the swimming pool and hot tub there are details on how to book this in your information pack and we are always happy to help, you need only ask. Sometimes we keep it open longer just to accounts campers like yourself.

Unfortunately we are only a pop up campsite, this means that we don’t have all the facilities of a year round campsite. We do try to make this clear in the description before you book, and in your information pack.

There is one pub 400m away that sells lovely food called the red tile and 2 others around 1.5 miles away called the king William and the crown, these are all traditional English pubs. On top of this there is also leather and lace less than a mile away, which is a bar. These should have also been listed in your information pack, however we are also very happy to help.

Loved the magic the place created naturally ❤️ The facilities are amazing loved the option of having an inside seating area that’s open 24 hours and somewhere you can charge your phones. Beautiful animals clearly well cared for and loved. The people here clearly have pride of there site and I know it sounds corny but I’ve stayed in many camp sites it’s not just a covid situation and started this year I have been doing many years and this was definitely the most magical place I have ever stayed and I intend on staying again. I booked this place as a cheeky couple of days with friends and have a full week booked in lands end at end of August i seriously don’t think lands end will beat the magic of this place. The night sky surprised me with the amount of stars that were visible the scenery is so beautiful The animals so approachable The people are so friendly and helpful and then I can seem stressed or overworked and clearly loved working their On-site CAFE for those lovely lattes I love swimming pool Jacuzzi and sauna was out of this world This is definitely a place I’ve bookmarked and will be returning

    Disliked:

The fact I only booked two days and couldn’t book longer because of work otherwise I would have seen if I could have stayed longer

Being pitched next to the donkeys and its a lovely little camp site

    Disliked:

Only 1 toilet being available during the night, only had 1 hour in the pool and hot tub and still cost £40

From the manager...

We are really pleased you liked the campsite and being next to the donkeys! We very are sorry that the 3 of ended up paying £40 and you only had one hour in the swimming pool, hot tub and sauna in the end. We did keep actually keep the facility open an extra hour longer specifically for you so its great that this ended up being exclusive use for a whole hour. It is a shame that you didn't attend at the beginning of the session so the you could make use of the 2 hours that you paid for.

Lovely campsite really well maintained. Friendly staff and the facilities are excellent. Stunning views, very very quiet. Farm animals kept the children entertained and we adopted a cat for the last couple of days who was very keen for fuss. The Gym is very well equipped. Would recommend for young families especially if you want to use the gym and have the convenience of an on-site cafe and bistro- food is well nice.

    Disliked:

I wouldn’t say disliked/ bit strong- but we thought the spa was a little pricey- we booked this out and the kids loved the pool and we loved the hot tub and sauna- but it cost us about £46 for two hours. I also spent 18 on a week membership of the gym which was unlimited use so can’t complain about that. We got lucky and were the only ones using the spa so was worth the money, but I think we were sharing with others we might have felt a little short changed. Maybe up the cost of the nightly camping rate and include use of the pool and spa or offer discounted rate for campers as we spent money on food/drinks gym etc.
Also the timers on the toilet lights caught me out a couple of times!

Local attractions

Cheddar Gorge (35 minutes’ drive) takes the activity underground. A National Trust site with stalactite caverns, prehistoric sites and the UK's largest underground river network, there's a big underground world to explore.

Back above the ground, there are rather ripe walking grounds nearby. Aside from the Somerset countryside, The Sweet Track around the Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve (20 minutes) runs along old Neolithic wooden tracks past meadows and reedbeds. At Catcott Complex Nature Reserve (10 minutes), the three-kilometre loop is popular with birdwatchers, while RSPB Ham Wall (15 minutes) is another good spot for wildlife watchers with bitterns, kingfishers and water voles.

Wanting to see the sea too? Well, in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes), there’s more than just sea air. Go windsurfing or paddleboarding down at the beach or buckle in for some funfair rides on the shore.

If you’re one for the city too, the site is well-connected to the M5 (the nearest junction is 10 minutes’ drive away), so that Bristol (55 minutes), Exeter (an hour) and Bath (an hour and 15 minutes) are within reach for a day sightseeing or visiting Bath’s Roman baths.

Must see

  • Clarks Village (11.5 kilometres)
  • Glastonbury Abbey (12.7 kilometres)
  • Glastonbury Tor (14.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Stembridge Tower Mill (10.9 kilometres)
  • King John's Hunting Lodge (15.5 kilometres)
