  • Family-friendly campsite adjoining a Winfrith Newburgh pub in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
  • Showers and loos on site; delicious food and drink in The Red Lion pub
Set in the middle of lovely Dorset countryside and on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Winfrith Newburgh, The Red Lion is a family-run pub with a namesake campsite on the extensive field to its rear. There’s easy access by car to dump your gear at the spacious pitches – most are sheltered by mature trees – and modern facilities on-site include showers, mains water, toilets and a washing-up area. The adjoining pub is open throughout the year: winter brings warming log fires while summer invites alfresco dining in the beer garden – and whenever you visit, you’re assured of a constant supply of delicious food as well as award-winning West Country ales and ciders. Luckily the site is dog-friendly as it’s a great base for soaking up Dorset’s rural vibe on quiet walks across the downs. If you’d like to spark up your barbecue while you’re there, there’s a small store in the village; otherwise, do a bigger stock up in Dorchester (15 minutes).

What customers say

Great spot by the pub, with super friendly staff. Food's tops, and it's a good base for seeing the sights. Pitches are decent, but loos are a bit basic. Road noise is sometimes a bother.

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked Gravel electric pitch was pretty level, great team behind the bar and serving food which was good especially with the 10% discount, we are booked in for two nights over new year so wanted to check it out first.

Disliked Nothing really as we are self sufficient in the MH, I guess more toilets and showers would be required in busy periods

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked Loved the easy of pitching up, as complete newbie!
Check in process easy, and efficient. Sufficient information given, with emergency details if needed. On-site staff in emergency given, as a reassurance.
Friendly staff, and good pub food in the evening. Discount available.
Also, do breakfast, with discount next morning

Disliked For a pub pitch up shower and toilets are very clean, and well maintained.
No apparently heating, so would be cold in autumn and winter months.
Would recommend larger shelves, or more hooks, as difficult to keep pjs dry, and new clothes dry too site

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Quiet and clean with good facilities. Next to a park for our dog to run round. We had an excellent Sunday lunch in Red lion pub. Lizzie was bubbly, warm and friendly. Will definetly stop again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location, near to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Level, clean pitches. Discount voucher for pub meals.

Disliked Poor quality washing up area (one small
sink at the back of the pub), insufficient number of (3) toilets and (4)showers for number of pitches and not in a block so difficult for families with children.
Basic facilities for the price.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you appreciated the location, level pitches, and pub meal discount.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The red lion campsite was in a great location, between Weymouth and Poole and just a short drive to Lulworth cove and Durdle Door. Facilities were great and it was so nice to have the pub on site as was great to pop in for some drinks or food to get cosy in the evening. The food was fab and the staff were so lovely. Lizzie and the chap from Pontypridd (sorry we didn't get your name) served us the most and they were so welcoming and friendly.

Disliked Not a dislike, people have previously mentioned the road noise. It is on a busy main road but you get used to the noise and only noticible in the night when heavy vehicles pass through.

From the manager: Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re delighted you enjoyed the campsite. We hope to welcome you back soon.

Local attractions

You won’t have to wander very far afield to sample the best of Dorset attractions; The Red Lion is only 10 minutes’ drive from Man O’War Beach on the Jurassic Coast, the spectacular Durdle Door sea arch and romantic, almost circular Lulworth Cove. The kids will relish the chance to encounter the primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (yes, also 10 minutes away), or see the nesting mute swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes). Weymouth (25 minutes), its sandy beaches and Sea Life Adventure Park is also a good bet for keeping youngsters happy. Plus, the ever-popular Tank Museum in Bovington (10 minutes) is within striking distance. Take the Dorset air as you scramble up to Osmington White Horse (15 minutes), cut into the limestone landscape in 1808, for views over the downs to the English Channel. There are more wonderful vistas to be had from hilltop Corfe Castle (also 15 minutes), and if any cobwebs still need blowing away, head to Chesil Beach (half an hour) for a blustery walk along the shingle.
