  • Family-friendly campsite adjoining a Winfrith Newburgh pub in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
  • Showers and loos on site; delicious food and drink in The Red Lion pub
Set in the middle of lovely Dorset countryside and on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Winfrith Newburgh, The Red Lion is a family-run pub with a namesake campsite on the extensive field to its rear. There’s easy access by car to dump your gear at the spacious pitches – most are sheltered by mature trees – and modern facilities on-site include showers, mains water toilets and a washing-up area. The adjoining pub is open throughout the year: winter brings warming log fires while summer invites alfresco dining in the beer garden – and whenever you visit, you’re assured of a constant supply of delicious food as well as award-winning West Country ales and ciders. Luckily the site is dog-friendly as it’s a great base for soaking up Dorset’s rural vibe on quiet walks across the downs. If you’d like to spark up your barbecue while you’re there, there’s a small store in the village, otherwise do a bigger stock up in Dorchester (15 minutes).

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked: Nice little campsite for a nights stop over

Disliked: Showers and toilet's are coded with is a pain and we’re not very pleasant. Went in the pub for a meal. Pretty sure we were the second table to order. After 55 minutes they came over to say they ran out of sausage and mash for my 2 year old, was told the replacement we chose would take 10 minutes. After a further 25 minutes the food arrived ( we’re not told upon ordering there would be a wait). Half way through the meal we order our child’s ice cream that should have come with the meal. A further 20 minutes it has still not arrive so we collect the bill, complaint and all we got was a measly discount. Appalling especially with a young hungry child who had to wait 1hr and 20 minutes for her dinner.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely in fact perfect pitch as it was hot weather and we had dogs. The shelter of trees.
The Red Lion pub served delicious food at a fair price.
The owner was present and asked how we were - felt safe and well looked after in a perfect environment to explore the surrounding area.

Thank you

Disliked: The code to the toilets was tricky when you were desperate to tinkle - don’t leave it until the last minute.
The pig sty building by our pitch - would be so much better if it was taken down and a multi purpose building for toilet, shower and or just a washing up station with a drinking water tap would be an improvement for that field.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The pub does good sized portions of food and is the best part about the campsite which is very basic.

Disliked: Noisy site, we hardly got any sleep, there was a large group shouting and screaming at 3am but the owner did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, even though Alan claimed he was staying in the same field that night!! No lighting in toilets which have an annoying code to enter!! We were refused breakfast as they were "Saving the food for tomorrow's guests" - OUTRAGEOUS!!! Would NOT return under any circumstances.

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked: The pitch was clean, level and well looked after. The on site facilities were basic but spotlessly clean. The major plus is the pub and it's friendly owner, manger and staff. The food was very reasonably priced and quality.
All round for us a good introduction to mobile home camping

Electric gravel and sand touring pitch

Liked: The pub was lovely. Good food and very friendly staff and also dog friendly. Fantastic atmosphere.
Lovely level pitches.

Disliked: Although a lovely site did feel The price per pitch was expensive for the standard of facilities provided. Felt they needed upgrading. They were kept very clean.

Local attractions

You won’t have to wander very far afield to sample the best of Dorset attractions; The Red Lion is only 10 minutes’ drive from Man O’War Beach on the Jurassic Coast, the spectacular Durdle Door sea arch and romantic, almost circular Lulworth Cove. The kids will relish the chance to encounter the primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (yes, also 10 minutes away), or see the nesting mute swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes). Weymouth (25 minutes), its sandy beaches and Sea Life Adventure Park is also a good bet for keeping youngsters happy. Take the Dorset air as you scramble up to Osmington White Horse (15 minutes), cut into the limestone landscape in 1808, for views over the downs to the English Channel. There are more wonderful vistas to be had from hilltop Corfe Castle (also 15 minutes), and if any cobwebs still need blowing away, head to Chesil Beach (half an hour) for a blustery walk along the shingle.
