You can’t bear to tear yourself away from your urban comforts, but you still want a break that a) has a countryside feel and b) puts you within walking distance of the coast. Hmm… sounds like a tall order, right? But that’s exactly what's on the menu at Swanage Bijou Glamping. The site is on the outskirts of Swanage, and it’s a pleasant 10-minute walk through parkland to the centre of this Dorset coastal town (or five minutes’ drive). High hedges, trees and heaps of open space lend the site a real countryside feel; what’s more, campfires are allowed, so you can also experience that genuine outdoorsy vibe. You’ll be sleeping in pre-erected canvas bell tents that can accommodate up to four adults (or up to two adults and three children), each kitted out with comfortable beds, colourful rugs and fluffy cushions. You can bring your favourite bed linen from home or hire it here. Swanage sits on the Jurassic Coast, so you can fill your days with long walks along this UNESCO World Heritage Site, looking for fossils or taking in views of dramatic coastal scenery, starting at Peveril Point promontory (25 minutes on foot, through Swanage), and moving on to the Dancing Ledge (five minutes’ drive) or Old Harry Rocks (10 minutes). If you’d rather take it easy, Swanage beach has enough to keep you and the kids entertained, with crazy golf at Santa-Fe Fun Park, a short pier with bay views and, of course, plenty of sand for castle building. Amenities on site include hot showers, flushing toilets and a washing-up area, plus a fridge/freezer. There are also recycling facilities, and an airbed-pumping point.
