Stay with the alpacas
The alpacas
From the shower and toilet veiw

  • Eco-friendly off-grid campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport, Dorset
  • Jurassic Coast beaches five minutes’ drive; Dorchester 20 minutes
  • Smallholding with alpacas and goats; animal meets-and-greets available
Alpacas and goats ever featured in your holiday plans? Well, now they can, for Flowerdew Farm is an eco-friendly working alpaca and goat smallholding tucked among hills in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. When you rock up to stay at this two-acre site, the owners of the furry troops are happy to offer feeding sessions, alpaca meet-and-greets and lots of other animal-inspired activities – you get to sleep on camping fields right next to the animals too. As the place is run on sustainable lines, facilities (shared flushing toilets, one hot shower, rain-harvested water at drinking points) are off grid wherever possible and completely environmentally friendly. The vibe is basic but comfy chic, with lots of upcycling of building materials to be as kind to the environment as possible. Please take eco-friendly products with you so you don’t put anything toxic on to the land. For safety reasons, you'll also need to raise any barbecues off the ground (firepit rental is available), and the owners ask that you buy their clean-burning logs rather than bring your own. If there’s a weather warning, drought or fire ban, barbecuing will be put on hold. Luckily there’s a decent pub in Puncknowle village (five minutes’ walk) that will sort you out a meal if it's not barbecue weather. The camping fields are car-free zones, and wheelbarrows are on hand for lugging your gear to your pitch. If you’re exploring locally and don’t want to use the car, e-bikes are available for hire.

What customers say

Flowerdew Farm gets a thumbs-up for its friendly, eco-vibe. Clean facilities, a welcoming host, and charming farm animals (alpacas and goats!) are big draws. It's praised for its rural setting, with pubs and walks nearby. Downsides include limited loos when busy, occasional farm/road noise, and some pitches feeling a bit snug.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Competitively priced, cute alpacas and goats, friendly owner, fridge and freezer access plus phone charging was a real bonus plus sofas and a proper table to eat at were much appreciated.

Disliked Some noise from the road, other pitches quite close so noise was an issue at times, washing up area needs a new tap, wi-fi was very flakey

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked We liked the laid back atmosphere and rural setting.
Only stayed one night but we found it had a friendly relaxed feel to it.
I liked the compost toilet and the cosy barn set up as a sitting room, with the use of a fridge and freezer.
Also liked the llamas.

Disliked Currently only one shower on site, so if we hadn't had our own shower in our camper van might have found that a bit frustrating .However, was aware of that when booking.
Also had a disturbed night with someone who'd been evicted off the site trying to regain entry, but I understand this was a one off unusual incident outside the owners control.

Bell tent (four person, basic)

Liked Good communication from the host, Claire. Lovely environment and great animal experiences on offer. The animals' welfare is clearly top priority for Claire.

Great setting, close to nice places to visit, and comfortable tent.

Disliked The toilet facilities were adequate but slightly uncomfortable e.g. the lights inside the toilet didn't work, the tap was difficult to use.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked 3rd Visit to Flowerdew and had a great time. This is an off grid site with an eco vibe. No big fancy facilities and thats exactly how it is described. Saturday was very busy, as a expected, but Claire did a grand job keeping things ticking over. The composting toilet is a wonderful new addition. Had a wonderful animal experience with 'The Girls' and Shirley and Valentine. Already planning next year. Keep doing what you are doing Claire.

From the manager: Thank you for the review. We are a quiet site and we do give warning and notice that Saturdays and peak times are normally fully booked and are busier than normal, this was also shared along with the T&Cs and confirmation email on booking. We also allocate plenty of room and fire safety. We do kindly ask guests to talk to owners, if anyone can be moved, or needs more space, we can always try and accommodate. But we cant if we don't know on site at the time. We also show you to your pitch and ask everyone if their pitch is OK. So please do talk to us, as its hard to meet everyones requirements unless we know at the time.

A great site with a nice family feel, limited space/facilities though

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The rural nature of the site and the friendly welcome. The animals are great and the walks from the site are stunning.

Disliked The facilities are very basic and limited in number, especially when the site is full. Only one shower and three portaloos.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you we love our eco sustainable and back to basics campsite. We have ample toilets and bring in extras at peak times and we also have a compost toilet, which we clean and carefully check at all times. Along with only 1 x shower is listed on our facilities, listing and on our confirmation email when you book. We are also waiting on planning to go ahead and improve our facilities. We do recommend please reading our confirmation email and T&Cs, along with other sites that you may visit, as these are clearly listed when you book.

Local attractions

Local walks start right at your pitch, or you can join the South West Coast Path at Hive Beach (five minutes’ drive) for some serious clifftop yomps with spectacular views along the Jurassic Coast clifftops. Get out for bracing walks along Chesil Beach from West Bexington, admire the colourful wild flowers backing Cogden beach (both five minutes), or go fossil-hunting in West Bay (10 minutes). If your kids (and indeed you) enjoyed making friends with the livestock at Flowerdew Farm, they’d probably also love to say ‘hi’ to the donkeys, reindeers and emus at Vurlands Animal Farm (five minutes). To watch turtles, sharks and rays flit around aquariums instead, head for Sea Life Centre Weymouth (half an hour). For town time, Weymouth (25 minutes) is a pretty Georgian-era seaside town packed with historic pubs and with a yachting harbour to stroll around; lively Bridport (10 minutes) is known for its seafood dining scene and antiques quarter, and Dorchester (20 minutes) is Dorset’s capital of culture, with lots of sights associated with the famed local-born author Thomas Hardy.
