General

  • Peaceful meadow site in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse
  • A 10-minute drive from Christchurch and 15 minutes from Bournemouth
  • Barbecues and towels to hire

All set for a stay in peaceful rural Dorset surroundings? Head for Heronshaw Meadow, where pitches are in a meadow surrounded by fields and trees next door to a well-established guesthouse. Families, couples and well-behaved dogs are all welcome at this quiet site in the grounds of a pretty 17th-century farmhouse 10 minutes’ drive from Christchurch.

Mike and Andrea are your friendly hosts here, and they’ve set everything up to be as convenient as possible. Guests all have access to toilet and shower facilities, a kitchen and washing-up area, picnic tables for your outdoor meals and a reception area where you can hire towels and barbecues or pick up hints on where to go locally.

If you need some ideas in the bag before you head off, perhaps plan for strolls on the 2.5-mile Throop Loop walk which runs next to the site, days of golf/fishing/paintballing a few minutes’ drive away, or outings to the coast at Bournemouth, Mudeford Quay and Hengistbury Head (all within about 20 minutes’ drive).

A couple of pubs are within a few minutes’ drive if you fancy heading out for dinner; barbecues and campfires are permitted on site if you’d prefer to stick to fresh-air meals on site, and a couple of decent-sized supermarkets are 10 minutes’ drive away for all the necessary bits.

Lovely place to pitch up! Kids really enjoyed their first proper camping trip! Clean toilets, washing up facilities and nice clean warm showers! Hosts Andrea and Mike were so friendly and helpful and were on hand if anything was needed. They have a little shop in the front cabin with a few drinks and Ice creams which was a lovely touch! Also they have a power pack for guests to use if needed! Really great experience for the whole family!

This is a lovely pop-up campsite with shower-cabins and toilet-cabins (as well as a compost toilet!) - and a stand-alone sink (as deep as you need a sink to be!) with drinking water on tap. Lots of space. Great location. Lovely hosts. I don't know what people hope to get warned about with regard to camp sites. I love them all, and this one converted my sister ('I don't do camping!') who had never camped in her entire life (nearly 50 years): 'I'm hooked! Why haven't we done this before?!' So there.

    Disliked:

Nothing (I hope I don't have to write a minimum of two sentences about not having found anything to dislike?!?)

Porta-loo and porta-shower facilities were very close by. The owners were lovely and allowed us to pitch up early so that we could go to a wedding near by. Pitches were level and generous in size!

    Disliked:

I went for a shower, it was warm for about 30 seconds but then went freezing.
You need ear plugs to stay here as very close to the airport (not the owners fault)!

Really enjoyable stay over the bank holiday weekend. Made to feel very welcome by Andrea and Mike, the excellent hosts. The highlight was the adults v kids rounders match followed by a relaxing evening over beers and cider. Really generous pitch size. Very handy location for getting to an event I was attending in the centre of Bournemouth and getting down to the beach.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. It was very different to a site I stayed at on the Gower, but it was exactly what I expected.

The site was kept clean and the owners clearly take pride

    Disliked:

Cars driving through the middle of a site with children playing, having portaloos in the middle of a site next to a washing up stand wasn’t ideal, they could just increase the compost toilets and loose the portaloos like a lot of sites now. There was also nowhere to get warm water for washing children so we had to keep boiling a kettle and the showers had no consistency in temperature. A bit of work and re jigging of the space could make this a great little site (inspirations could come from facilities at Strawfields or Dorset Glamping Fields, both are small sites but with fab facilities)

There are walks galore too, at places like Stour Valley Nature Reserve (10 minutes) and Moors Valley Country Park (15 minutes), which also has bike hire and a Go Ape treetop trail. You can fish at the country park too if you like, or at River Stour Throop Fishery (10 minutes).

Dorset’s coastline may well be calling too, whether you fancy a day on the sands at Bournemouth beach (15 minutes), a stroll through Hengistbury Head nature reserve (15 minutes) or a day of watersports from Mudeford Quay (20 minutes).

There’s also a lot to explore at Highcliffe Castle (20 minutes), which has woodland walks and manicured gardens as well as the castle itself to visit – and there’s a beach a short walk away too. Meanwhile, if the weather dampens any outdoor plans, Splashdown waterpark (25 minutes) is a good option for family days out.
