  • Pop-up wild campsite on a working beef and sheep farm
  • A short walk to the Two Moors Way, just outside Exmoor National Park
  • Dog-friendly pitches with easy access to the A361
Relax and get back to nature on Swineham Farm, a family- and dog-friendly wild campsite set on two-and-a-half acres of green fields surrounded by beech hedges and trees, 10 minutes' drive from the village of Knowstone. As it's close to the A361 and about 20 minutes from the M5, this is a handy base for stopovers on westbound journeys as well as being a great base for exploring Exmoor and the north Devon coast. This rural spot is next to a nature reserve, so you may well spot red deer or a buzzard as well as the resident flock of sheep and herd of cattle out grazing. It's all very laidback on site, with plenty of space for kids to play and for guests to set up campfires. Dogs are welcome (with considerate owners), and there are lots of places to take them out for a walk nearby (the market town of Dulverton, on the banks of the River Barle 15 minutes' drive away, is particularly popular). For longer hikes, head out onto the Two Moors Way, which passes not far away. There's much to see and do locally, so the owners are happy to recommend places to eat and give suggestions for days out. Pitches here are fairly simple, but you'll have access to essential services including portable toilets, a cold water tap and waste collection bins.

Local attractions

If it's fresh air and lovely scenery you're after, Exmoor National Park (10 minutes' drive away) is the place to head to. Bring bikes to mosey along quiet roads of the open moors, or set your sights on the challenges of some of the bigger hills. Walkers can likewise pick from serious hikes on remote moors or more sedate riverside strolls. For a pub lunch or afternoon tea, aim for the pretty village of Dulverton (15 minutes). Amble around its independent shops before heading to Tarr Steps, a landmark ancient clapper bridge with gentle riverside walks through ancient woodland. The National Trust's Knightshayes House, garden and parkland are just 15 minutes away with acres to explore; it's a similar distance to Quince Honey Farm, a great place for children to learn all about bees and nature and with a lovely restaurant (plus a handy soft play for wet days…) If it's the coast you're craving, it's an easy 40-minute drive to the lovely seaside fishing villages of Instow, Appledore and Westward Ho! or a further 10 minutes to the vast (and dog-friendly) golden beach of Saunton Sands.
