Browns farm caravan park

  • Family-owned site with spacious pitches on a Devon working farm
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Exeter and the Jurassic Coast
  • Lots of walks in the local area; 10 minutes' walk to cosy village pub
Surrounded by lovely scenery next to the 14th-century farmhouse on a working farm, you’ll probably feel like you’re completely immersed in rural Devon when you stay at Browns Farm Caravan Park. And indeed you will be – the pitches at this family-owned site are spacious and peaceful, and a short drive away from footpaths for walking alone or with your dog by your side. Other outdoor activities including fishing, golf and horse riding can also be tracked down in the local area. Fittingly for a real rural location, there’s a lovely old pub 10 minutes’ walk away in the local village of Woodbury Salterton for drinks and dinner by the log fire under the traditional beams. There’s much more to this place than purely rural outings though, as it’s in an excellent spot for all sorts of days out. City days in Exeter and sandy ones in Budleigh Salterton require a drive of about 15 minutes or so, and there are plenty of attractions nearby too, from the rides of Crealy Theme Park to the floral displays of Bicton Park Botanical Gardens. Wherever you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to peaceful pitches backed by hedgerows and with access to handy facilities including wifi, a washing-up area, a launderette, chemical disposal and a bathroom block with toilets and showers (including disabled facilities).

What customers say

A top-notch, chilled farm site with lekker, level spots, many with water/elecs. Clean facilities, decent pub nearby. Fab for exploring. Minor farm smells & iffy Wi-Fi noted. Most would come back!

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Clean, quiet, good local pub

Disliked Dog walk from site would be nice

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. As a working farm we are unable to provide a dog walking area. Grass and other crops grown on our land are all for the production of livestock feed and as such we cannot risk contamination via dog waste which can be fatal to bovines. We are always happy to advise on popular dog walking routes.

Adequate but regret we would not plan another stay there.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The site itself was in a good location, and we did enjoy the village walk and access to the No 58 bus.

Disliked We arrived at the site on 1st July, as booked, to find that our designated pitch was effectively all hard standing. We had booked via Pitchup and thought that it had been made clear that our 'small camper van plus awning' required a grass pitch for the awning. As a consequence erecting the awning took at least an extra hour, on a hot day, hammering in rock pegs. There were evidently no single other pitches available for the duration of our 4 day stay.
We have frequently stayed on farm sites and thought we knew what to expect. The smell from the adjacent farmyard in the heat was unbearable during our stay, and we were plagued by flies, which we felt was no coincidence.
Given the £31 per night fee, we felt that the 4 WC's and 4 showers provided may not be sufficient when the site was full. The facilities themselves were adequate but starting to show their age. The hard standing areas themselves were not well maintained, giving the whole site a slightly run-down feel.
The result amounted to us not having the relaxing break we had planned and we ended up leaving a day early.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. We allocate pitches as booked, a guest booking a hard standing pitch with a small grass area will receive that. It is important to book appropriately for your needs. We cannot apologise for what is advertised as a working farm having the aroma of one. Flies are a nuisance during hot spells and not necessarily connected to farm activity.
We have sufficient facilities for our site size. Whilst not aesthetically pleasing updating would involve considerable expense which would inevitably involve a price increase and the function offered would be the same so not something we are planning at this time. The facilities are kept clean and well maintained. The hardstanding areas do receive attention when unoccupied.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (plus)

Liked Good sized pitch with own water tap and close electric point. Cut grass and clean hard standing gravel.
Really good showers with masses of hot water.
Warm welcome.
Toilets with loo paper!

Disliked Nothing really.
The shower and toilet floors were cleaned but could do with a deep clean scrub to get the ridged floor tiles to look better. Corners in the toilets and shower rooms had the same build up of dusty dirt each day we were there so clearly needed a thorough clean.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are pleased that you plan to visit again. Our facilities are cleaned well daily . It is not possible to do a "spring clean" daily of the areas you have highlighted as this takes considerable time and guests are constantly requesting access. We do however undertake these tasks during quieter periods.

Would definitely love to return.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (plus)

Liked Well kept, clean facilities, quiet, all dogs well behaved & controlled.
Friendly greeting on arrival-
Proximity to village pub.
Tall hedges to back up to. Electricity & tap water on each pitch

Disliked I would have preferred a privacy hedge between vehicles BUT everyone kept to themselves and were friendly.

From the manager: Thank you for your review we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Our site pitches are quite spacious compared to most, however , should you visit again perhaps request a corner pitch and we will try our best to help.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked This is a lovely small and quiet site with well spaced pitches that offer some privacy. The site is clean and away from main roads. The facilities are small but clean with nice big shower units.
It is on a working farm so you do hear and smell the farm, but I think it adds to the charm.

We are repeat visitors and will be returning again soon.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass pitch (premium)

Liked Loved the huge pitch and view. Showers were hot and facilities clean.

Disliked Wi-Fi was terrible and no 4G signal. Makes it difficult to plan activities etc. unfortunately this is too inconvenient.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (plus)

Liked Wonderful site in an excellent location. Large pitches. Although site was full no issue for using toilets and showers. Plenty of hot water. Very quiet, just perfect

Disliked Overflowing recycling bins.
WiFi hit or miss.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We have a regular collection of recycling at quite some expense ,but at busy times our collection capacity can become overwhelmed at which point we do try to tidy the area. The wifi we offer is basic but we make no additional charge for this service.

Local attractions

Time to stretch your legs? The closest spot is Woodbury Common, a mile away and a handy spot for dog walking, but there’s much to explore as the site sits on the edge of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And of course there’s always the South West Coast Path – the seven-mile stretch from Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth is a particularly rewarding one. Speaking of the coast, Budleigh Salterton (15 minutes’ drive) is a lovely place for a day out on the sandy beach, but you could also explore the offerings of Exmouth (15 minutes) or Dawlish (half an hour). Keeping it countryside instead, there’s fishing at Hogsbrook Lakes (five minutes), golf at Woodbury Park (five minutes) and the chance to coo over cute animals at either World of Country Life (15 minutes) or The Donkey Sanctuary (20 minutes). To keep the kids entertained for a full day, try the rides, shows, play areas and animal attractions at Crealy Theme Park (five minutes).
