Bales Ash Campsite: The communal campfire, perfect to meet fellow guests

General

  • Chilled camping as it used to be but with quality free hot showers
  • Free hot showers
  • Relaxed and spacious site with firepits for hire

Homemade Devon cream teas, views to make your eyes water, a communal firepit and a warm welcome for the pooch… it's no surprise that guests glow with warmth about Bales Ash Campsite near Umberleigh.

Described by its amiable owners as 'a little green campsite in the heart of north Devon', Bales Ash sits up above the Taw Valley amid countryside of the beaut variety and fab views across to nearby Exmoor. The Tarka Trail is within easy driving distance and the (also fab) surfing beaches of north Devon are within about 12 miles.

As you might expect from a site that endorses 'camping as it used to be', the vibe is relaxed and friendly. The amenities are kept to a spotless standard and include three hot showers, two eco-friendly compost loos and outdoor Belfast sinks with hot and cold water. Wifi is available and guests can charge phones for free in the shower block.

Water at Bales Ash comes from the site's borehole and is treated to provide pristinely clean fresh drinking water; tap water standpipes are also on each pitching field.

But back to those Devon cream teas… Teas and cakes can be baked on request (surely something to request as soon as you arrive) and the owners specialise in top-notch gluten-free baking.

And then settle down to stargaze or to sit by the communal firepit: guests glow with warmth about the perfect quiet of this place too.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

We had a lovely few days in the Beech Hut.
It was very clean and had everything we needed.
The showers we're great - very hot and needed after a long day walking.
The enclosure around the hut was very dog safe.
Debbie and Basia made us feel very welcome.
If you're looking for a more 'civilised' camping experience, we would definitely recommend.

We loved the tranquility of Bales Ash, it was perfect to return to and chill after a busy day at the beach. The space between pitches was brilliant as was the option to pay a little extra for your own toilet (portaloo). The site was very well maintained and the staff friendly and helpful. Our young children loved the freedom to roam and feed the beautiful bunnies! We enjoyed days at Putsborough beach (approx 1 hour drive) and Saunton Sands (approx 45 min drive) as well as a lovely cream tea at High Bickington community cafe (such friendly volunteers!)

    Disliked:

We totally understood the reasoning behind asking you to pre-book shower slots but felt this restricted the spontaneity of camping a little.

From the manager...

We totally agree, we'll all be delighted to not run a shower booking system again as soon as it's safe to do so. Hopefully ithe world will be a safer place in 2022! Cora and Humphrey the bunnies send their love!

The amount of space for each pit, allowed to have a fire pit and space for kids and adults to play ball games

    Disliked:

Toilets were portaloos or composting toilets. Electric pitches had their own portaloo which is a convenience of an evening and probably more desirable than a camping toilet u clean out yourself, but they got quite smelly until emptied.
Showers and washing up facilities were also below par. The sinks for cleaning dishes were outside with no cover and hot water was limited so the showers had hot water and the showers were okay, but needed some way of clearing away the surplus water from the shower and could do with more cleaning. The showers you had to book and could only book a 20 minute slot for your pitch, so if you are a family of 5 you had 20 mins to get everyone through the showers and clean your teeth whereas a couple had the same time for 2 to do the same. Could do with a different approach, maybe allowing 10 mins per camper rather than 20 per pitch.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review Gareth. We only offered the private portaloos because of Covid as many families felt safer with their own toilet and portaloos are obviously the only way we can offer this. Normally we just have the shared compostable toilets as we are a traditional basic campsite with straightforward facilities. We have also removed the shared cleaning equipment from the shower area during the Covid pandemic so that it isn't being handled by loads of different campers. Showers were disinfected and deep cleaned 4 times daily this year ( 15 times daily last year where we restricted it to just 15 families) and this allowed just under 39 x 20 minute slots of the 3 showers for families and groups to book which fitted well with the 30 families who we allowed on site at a time.
Sorry to hear that you felt that the booking system didn't work for you, it's been ever so hard to get it right for everyone. We agonised over how to make it work for all our campers. Sadly the 10 minute per person idea just doesn't work as you then get the crossing over of different groups in the outer shower area which was the whole point of the booking system. It certainly seems to have kept Covid from spreading at all at Bales Ash which was our aim so we're delighted about that. Normally we don't have a shower booking stem and it all works really well.
Second hot water tank being fitted Autumn 2021 ready for Summer 2022 - hoorah!

The cabin - well presented and a manageable size for two adults and two adult-sized children
The cabin was spotless - and well equipped
The children liked the WiFi in the cabin
The lack of crowding on the campsite
Clear signage explaining systems to cope with COVID
Excellent advice from the staff as to where to go for shopping etc

    Disliked:

We weren’t able to shower on either night simply because the shower booking capacity for everyone on site couldn’t cope with the numbers - but this was a product of COVID and we showered at the beach instead. Different but adequate!

This was our second stay Bales Ash and we are never disappointed. Well run and incredibly friendly. Brilliant pitch size, loved the private portaloo, firepit was great with well priced dry wood. We loved the idea of booking the shower rooms for a decent 'slot' and made full use of this facility - after long dog walks and a day on the beach.....three showers all in good working order were very welcome! We will definitely be back!

Well drained ground which stayed dry after heavy rain. We had a pitch with our own toilet which was good. Could see the Milky Way and shooting stars at night.

    Disliked:

Only one properly working shower for whole site of at least 25 families and other two showers, which wouldn't be enough if they were working, were usually cold. Only 2 washing up sinks, often cold. The sinks in the shower block only had cold water.
