  • Quiet farm campsite with Dartmoor and sea views in South Devon
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park and Bigbury-on-Sea
  • Off-grid shower and shared firepit; shops and pubs five minutes’ drive
Time to take the family – and the family dog, should you have one – on a back-to-basics holiday in deepest Devon? Let’s raise a cheer for Maple Meadow Camping, a pretty-much-wild site set on a small family-run farm five minutes’ drive from the town of Modbury, its food shops, pubs and restaurants. This may be a no-frills site, but it’s one with running water, a composting toilet and off-grid shower. What’s more, it’s right on the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with far-reaching views over Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams. Enjoy those views from the picnic benches dotted about the camping field. There are no marked pitches, so settle in the best spot for you. Some areas of the field are on a slight incline, but there are plenty of level areas to choose from. Once you’re all settled in, you can hire individual firepits, seasoned firewood and fire-lighting kits for a small fee. Sunsets can be pretty special up on that camping field, and after dark on clear nights, watch the stars come out and glitter in the skies above. Huddle up around the communal firepit and keep warm to make the most of the experience. Campers are welcome to meet the farm’s small flock of sheep and chickens on request – food for the sheep and fresh eggs for your breakfast are also available for sale.

Local attractions

When going to the beach heads up the to-do list, South Devon has plenty of options. If you prefer seclusion, Wonwell Beach (10 minutes’ drive) on the River Erne estuary, is often nigh-deserted, while Mothecombe Beach provides a crescent of sand and plenty of rock pools for kids to splash around in. For surfing and kayak rentals – and food trucks to stave off hunger attacks – Bantham Beach (both 20 minutes) is the place to be. The spit of sand at Bigbury-on-Sea (15 minutes) promises safe swimming for families, as well as sea tractor trips to Burgh Island at low tide. Once there, pay a visit to the Pilchard Inn, a former smuggling pub, or take afternoon tea in the renowned art-deco Burgh Island Hotel. To explore inland, Ivybridge (15 minutes) is the gateway to hiking routes and bike rides leading up to rocky tors in Dartmoor National Park. You can also visit the National Trust-owned Buckland Abbey (40 minutes), one-time residence of Sir Francis Drake and now home of formal Tudor-era gardens, a tithe barn, café and souvenir shops.

Liked: The views across the South Hams were spectacular and the peaceful, wild camping feel of Maple Meadow was exactly what we were looking for. When the clouds broke during our second evening the night sky was beautiful, and waking up to the sounds of the sheep and chickens in the next field was bliss. The owners - Matt and Lucy - were contactable by phone on arrival and introduced themselves when on site. They were incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful. The camping field is quite large and there are no set pitches which adds to the laid back feel. The maximum number of pitches at any time is 10 which means it would feel very spacious, even at full capacity. Our children loved having the space to run around and play. The one shower on site is a converted horse box with a gas boiler powered shower. It was clean, hot, very spacious, and had excellent pressure. There is a communal fire pit as well as a couple of old chimneas/bbqs available to have a fire at your tent. We had our own portable fire pit which Matt was happy for us to use. Firewood is available to purchase at the reasonable price of £5 a bag. Each bag contains some broken up pallet wood for kindling and some more substantial logs for when the fire’s going, so all you need to bring with you is firefighters (although Matt did kindly provide me with a couple as I had forgotten to bring them myself). The toilet facilities consisted of 1 composting toilet, which was clean and odour-free, and 1 portaloo positioned at opposite corners of the field. All-in-all it was a lovely 3 night stay and we would certainly consider coming back again.

Disliked: Whilst the toilet and shower facilities were ample for our stay, as there was only one other family on site whilst we were there, I do wonder how much queuing may be necessary with 5 or 10 families on site. The flattest part of the field (which is also where you get the best view) is against the top hedge which has the road on the other side. It is a small country road but, with 2 larger holiday parks around a mile further along, it was busier than you’d think so there was a bit of road noise. Neither of these points affected my stay enough to deduct any stars however.
