  • Off-grid Haldon Hills glampsite with spectacular Exe Estuary views
  • Go Ape Haldon five minutes’ drive; Dartmoor National Park 15 minutes
  • Spacious, bespoke wooden yurt; cooking on a campfire; wildlife haven
There’s nothing like a spectacular sunset, except maybe a spectacular sunrise. And getting up at dawn is not for everyone – but when you’re staying at Sunrise Camping at Penhill Farm in Devon, you really should make the effort, because although the views from the Haldon Hills to the Exe Estuary are stunning any time of day, they truly are spectacular at dawn on clear mornings. This small hilltop site is home to a handful of glampers at a time. The off-grid accommodation, compost loos and bucket showers may not be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re after a sustainable outdoor holiday, this could be the place for you. The glampsite is set in a three-acre, east-facing meadow backed by woodland with an abundance of birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Eco-conscious owners Kate and Simon have planted thousands of trees, replanted hedgerows and restored wildflower meadows to lessen the impact of the glampsite on their environment. And you certainly won’t be roughing it in your spacious roundhouse – just like a yurt but made from wood. The structure is clad in cedar, and the canvas ‘top hat’ comes off when the weather’s behaving so you can sleep under the stars. The yurt/roundhouse is set on a level wooden platform, and inside there’s a double bed and comfy single sofa beds (all linen is provided). Cooking and hot water are courtesy of campfires, and your alarm clock comes in the shape of the dawn chorus. Anyone arriving by bicycle gets extra kudos and a free box of eggs from the site’s free-range hens.

The Wooden yurt

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful campsite. I stayed in the yurt and I would highly recommend it. Super comfortable and rustic in the nicest possible way. Waking up to the wonderful view is something that I won't forget. Simon was accommodating and friendly. I look forward to coming back with the family at some point.

Willow shepherd's hut

Liked: This was a really great spot pitched up high on the hill, close to the forest and offering a really lovely view. We were greeted by Simon who was very welcoming and helpful in showing us the facilities. The hut was small and cosy but had mostly everything that we needed but could do with a bin or just remember to bring your own big bags. Also, there was plenty of wood for the fire at night which was great with to have with the surroundings. We enjoyed the process of making a fire and boiling the kettle in order to have a nice warm bucket shower! Just be prepared to have a quick-ish one! I would absolutely recommend this place and would happily return.

From the manager: Hi Josh Thanks a lot for coming to stay and for this review. Really glad you guys enjoyed yourselves and congrats on short but sweet bucket showers! I think the bin must have somehow ended up in one of the other units - apologies. Hope to see you again - you'd be very welcome any time. Best wishes Simon

The Wooden yurt

Liked: We found the yurt a very relaxing place to stay and a wonderful escape from the routine of city life. The location of the yurt is stunning, with fantastic extensive views. The yurt itself is beautiful, hand crafted and a really unusual way to spend the night - cooking over the campfire and feeling more at one with nature. The beds were very warm and comfortable. The kids loved the freedom to explore and roam safely. The location was ideal too, feeling remote but being just a short drive from Exeter.

From the manager: Thanks for this lovely review - hopefully see you again. Best wishes Simon

The Wooden yurt

Liked: Four of us stayed in the new wooden yurt at Penhill Farm for the weekend. The yurt (like pretty much everything) was beautifully & sustainably made, with a platform looking out towards the Exe perfect for a glass of wine in the evening. We cooked over the fire and sat talking until the small hours. It was absolute peaceful bliss! The bird song in the morning was incredible at this time of year. This is a really small off-grid site, with a composting loo and a neat bucket shower. Simon had kindly filled the big kettle with water for us so that we could easily heat water for a shower, but honestly a cold one in the morning helped shift a hangover pretty well. A wheelbarrow is available for shifting stuff up to the yurt which was really handy. We felt like everything had been thought of, down to extra blankets, matches, and all the kitchen utensils (including a bottle opener!) we’d need to cook for a couple of nights. The beds in the yurt were also really comfortable. We all left completely in awe of how Simon & Kate have transformed the site in 5 years, and hoping we can come back soon to see how the new vegetable garden develops!

From the manager: Hi Jenny, Thanks so much for this fantastic review! I think you've captured what we're about better than we do ourselves. Really glad you guys had such a good weekend and enjoyed the farm, the campsite and the yurt to full - kudos on the cold shower! As I said you'd all be very welcome any time - hopefully see you in the not too distant future. All the best Simon

Local attractions

When you’ve had enough of gazing at the views (unlikely really), head out to explore what you see. Penhill Farm sits above the Exe Valley in the Haldon Hills, and there are mountain-bike trails, walking routes and running trails in Haldon Forest Park. You can also swing through the trees on zipwires at Go Ape Haldon (both five minutes’ drive). Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes) is gateway to hikes to rugged tors, wild swimming in the river Dart and tours of National Trust-owned, art deco-styled Castle Drogo (half an hour). Top picks of South Hams beaches include pebble Slapton Sands (55 minutes) and the brace of sandy stretches at Salcombe (an hour). There are lively coastal towns to have a look at too. Pretty Exmouth (35 minutes) has lots of harbourside restaurants, and Teignmouth (25 minutes) has a pier and mini-golf course, plus a heated lido for anyone who doesn’t fancy swimming in the sea.
