  • Dog-friendly glamping getaway in a nine-acre wooded valley
  • A 35-minute walk from Dittisham and a 15-minute drive from Dartmouth
  • Woodfired hot tubs and barbecue area outside; communal games areas
This glamping site is impressive indeed and not just for its location, which is 35 minutes’ walk from the historic fishing village of Dittisham on the river Dart and 15 minutes’ drive from darling Dartmouth… Surrounded by the south Devonshire countryside and based in a private nine-acre wooded valley with a stream, Dittisham Hideaway is the latest venture from the hotelier and entrepreneur Peter de Savary and his wife Lana de Savary. As with all of Peter de Savary’s sites, the self-catering accommodations all have high-level designs and carefully considered amenities, from fine Egyptian cotton bed linen to a generous welcome hamper packed out with West Country produce and a bottle of wine. The private outside areas have a traditional woodfired hot tub, hammock, sunloungers, and a barbecue with a dining area. At the same time, a stay at this peaceful glamping getaway will also get couples, families and four-legged friends back to nature. The hideaway has private woodlands with a small circular dog walk trail and a small vegetable garden where guests can pick their own runner beans and peas (when in season). Communal areas include a boules pitch, ping pong table and an outdoor chess set. Each accommodation also has access to eco-friendly car charging points, electric wheelbarrows, a dog welcome pack and a dog washing area (yes, there are even mod cons for the furry kind). Outside of the site, there’s a fine selection of activities indeed, and that might include paddleboarding, kayaking, boat hire, horse riding, fishing or horse riding. There are beaches and a golf course within 15 minutes’ drive of the site (find more further out). The site will point you towards private chef recommendations, local dining venues and mobile beauty, hair and massage services too.

Local attractions

If you have mini family members to consider first, schedule in a few light thrills at Woodlands Family Theme Park (10 minutes’ drive). There’s a sweet steam train that runs through Dartmouth (15 minutes), as well as a castle where they can pretend to live in the old times. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (40 minutes) is another family-friendly attraction and likely to be a hit with animal-adoring kids (and big kids, in fact). Literature lovers can see where crime author Agatha Christie penned her novels at Greenway (45 minutes). Meanwhile, for history fans there’s a Tudor artillery fort at Bayard's Cove (15 minutes) and at Coleton Fishacre (40 minutes), there’s a traditional arts and crafts garden. Track down some tasty local grub in the market town of Tones (25 minutes) in between your travels. That fuel will come in handy when you’re out on Dartmoor National Park’s scenic – and sometimes tough – trails (half an hour).
