  • Dartmoor National Park half an hour’s drive; Castle Drogo 45 minutes
  • Well-equipped shepherd’s huts with hot tubs and views to Dartmoor
Time to sneak away for a breather with your beloved? If you fancy staying in a peaceful – and adults-only – hideaway for a few days, Moor View Retreat may be just the place for you. Accommodation here is in well-appointed, wooden shepherd’s huts – just the right size for two – on the outskirts of Morchard Bishop (10 minutes’ drive), a quiet village in the Devon countryside. Set at the top of a large field sheltered by trees, the huts are tastefully decorated and cleverly laid out for space and convenience with a kitchen corner (all the basics are there too), compact dining area, a sofa and kingsize bed with all linens supplied, including towels for the ensuite shower room. Moving outside, the huts have views towards Dartmoor National Park, which you can enjoy from the woodfired hot tub or outdoor seating on the wooden decking. There’s also a firepit for cosying up around on romantic evenings watching the sunset or doing a spot of stargazing in the dark skies. The huts are off a restricted byway, so you won’t hear any traffic noise, and there’s off-road parking too. If you’d like to dodge the cooking duties one evening, there’s a popular food pub in Morchard Bishop, where you’ll also find a small store for stocking up on essentials.

Local attractions

When you’re looking to explore on foot, have a meander around the woodland estate at Shobrooke Park (15 minutes’ drive); for something more challenging, try Dartmoor National Park (half an hour) for hikes up to Heltor Rock (50 minutes) and prehistoric stone circle like mysterious White Moor (an hour). At Bovey Tracey (50 minutes), cyclists can join the Dartmoor Way or the traffic-free Wray Valley Trail too. Add a bit of culture to your itinerary with a tour of Castle Drogo (45 minutes), a magnificent folly built in the 1930s by famed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Powderham Castle (55 minutes) is another bucket-list attraction; dating from the 14th century, it boasts lavishly ornate apartments liberally strewn with priceless antiques. The coastal city of Exeter (35 minutes) awaits with its impressive Gothic-era cathedral, intriguing collection of ephemera in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, and the lively culinary scene along Exeter Historic Quays. Keen foodies? Exmouth (an hour) has several seafood restaurants and a floating restaurant in the middle of the Exe Estuary.
