  • Small, friendly and dog-friendly family-run site near the Devon coast
  • 15 minutes from Westward Ho! surfing beach
  • Take a boat trip, spot seals and dive off Lundy Island
Clifftop walks and river trips, rockpooling and stargazing, surf beaches and the simple pleasure of cooking up a feast with friends around a firepit… There aren't too many spots where you can tick all those boxes, but it's all there at Treyhill Farm. This comfortable and friendly smallholding is on a hilltop looking onto north Devon's finest countryside, about five minutes' drive from a pub with grub and the banks of the River Torridge. The Treyhill team know what they're about – and that's sorting everything out so you can have a truly comfy and chilled stay in these scenic surrounds. They care about the details: flowers and herbs around the grounds adding scent and colour; fresh tea towels in the washing-up station; secure bike storage for cycling types. Across the cobbled courtyard the shared bathroom is bright, clean and cosy, kitted out with a big hot shower and an armchair. You want to feast alfresco, smelling the salty tang on the breeze mingle with the woodsmoke as you sip a glass of wine? Go ahead, the folks at the farm will supply you with pots, pans, firewood and fire-starting kits… plus recipes if you need some tips on firepit cuisine. And a corkscrew. They're also mines of information on the local area and happy to help. Book ahead and they'll take you on a fish and chip run to Bideford in their boat, or cruise you down the Torridge spotting kingfishers and herons. Canine companions are welcome at Treyhill (and the same goes for the village pub).

What customers say

Charming farm spot, great views, friendly hosts. Clean facilities, decent showers. Animals, rope swing, local access a plus. Watch out for busy periods, dog mess, and rough roads. Still, a top pick!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful little place. We loved all the little touches dotted around the place.
Chickens, pigs and peacocks.
We loved that the hosts left us to it but were there if need be
My child really liked the rope swing and ladder to play on

Disliked The showers could have been cleaner and are in need of a spruce up.

The noise from the dual carriageway was quite loud at night (we understand this cannot be helped)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the lovely comments of our farm, we always try to do our best to make the place special and create a home from home experience.

We are sorry you felt the showers needed more of a clean, they are an older shower block system but we are looking to get this updated this winter ready for next year. They are cleaned as regularly as possible, but during busier periods it can be difficult to keep it constantly spotless.
Yes the carriageway is something we cannot change, but its only slightly nosier during the peak busier times in the day and is quieter in the later afternoon/evening.
I am sorry this little things have stopped you from not wanting to return that is a shame, but we really appreciate you coming to stay.

All the best,
alice.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely glade with only a few tents so peaceful
Use of firepits and easy access/payment for logs, kindle and fire lighters when you wanted them
The walnut tree and ropes plus space in the middle of the glade for kids to easily play together and make friends was brilliant
Seeing the sunset from the gate with a view over the sea
The beautiful peacock hens and chickens
Use of microwave, kettle, cutlery, washing up stuff etc was very handy!
Hot showers (three of them seemed enough)
Dogs are allowed (we don’t have one but it was nice seeing them all and they were on leads)
Swallows nesting and singing around the toilet area were wonderful

Disliked Only two toilets/basins and one was slightly awkwardly next to people washing up. The other was in a nice bathroom though. One more would be ideal.
Slight sound of traffic
No wheelbarrow to help carry your heavy stuff from the car (although not terribly far, it would be nice to have this)
Slight slope for tents (though very common for most campsites in the area)

From the manager: Thank you for the wonderful comments about the farm, we really try to make it special for all guests. While giving that home away from home feel.

I am sorry you felt the toilet and basins were awkwardly placed, we are a very old farm and its very very difficult to re-structure everything this is something we can't change i am afraid.

Sorry there is no wheelbarrow, we do not really offer this as it's less than a minute walk from the parking to the camping area. However my number is located in numerous places, so if i had none i would have been more than happy to help any way i can :)

It is a shame you would not return form these small things, but we really do appreciate you coming to stay with us.

All the best,

alice.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Camping has a lot to do with personal preferences. The camping ground itself is relatively small compared to most. It is a small, enclosed field with a scattering of various trees (walnut, oak, cypress, cedar and a few large monterey pine). There is a rope swing and tree ladder on the walnut tree and the tree itself can be easily climbed. There are 3 glamping units on the field (2 bell tents and a gypsy caravan). The remainder of the field is given up to non-electric grass pitches, where you are able to set down your tent anywhere you like. There are also a scattering of hub wheels that are used for burning wood. The showers, toilets, drinking water and wahing up facilities are located off field around the back of the main house. You will have to negotiate a couple of gates to get there, but the walk is minimal and it's quite pleasant and the gardens and buildings have a lot of character. The farm keeps chickens. There's a coop on the main field and also at the entrance to the house. There is also an allotment at the top end of the camping ground. There is free use of a microwave and kettle if needed, and you can purchase wood and kindling at your pleasure. The owners have a couple of very friendly dogs, one of which is called Luna, and she loves a stick being thrown for her.

We loved our stay, as it was quiet, off the beaten track, friendly and well maintained. An idyllic location.

Thank you for coming to stay and we look forward to hopefully welcoming you back in the future :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The campsite is amazing, beautiful views, no cars in the camping area, contained space with quirky activities for my freerange kids to play and explore. Chickens and fresh eggs were popular. The amenities are spot on, love the cupboard of things you've forgotten and can borrow. Having campfires set up and plenty of wood (honesty box) made evenings fun and sugar fueled with marshmallows. Easy access to Bideford and Westward Ho! My Mum lives locally, I've known the area for 40+years and this is a hidden gem. There are stars for WiFi, it's camping, so unplug. But signal is great. Only dislike was leaving, we will be back. 10/10.

Meadow View bell tent (XL)

Liked The meadowview bell tent was great. It's really big inside, easy to stand upright in and warm and dry , even in the drizzly rain.
It's in a nice , quiet, tidy little field, and we enjoyed having a fire pit at night thanks, that was great fun. It's not too far from a shopping centre.

Disliked The showers and toilets could have been a bit cleaner. The cooking facilities are ... well.. pretty bad- No fridge, untidy area and dusty. Appreciated the helpful text before arrival but the young people , perhaps just working on this farm were very reclusive once there! Be friendly and welcoming, it really helps.

From the manager: hi ros,

thank you for your review.

I am glad you liked the bell tent and the fire bit.
I am sorry that you felt the toilets could have been cleaner, i try to clean them daily when i can but when we have busy periods they can become dirty quite quickly. Regarding the fridge, we do state there is no electric in our bell tents or camping, hence why the price is low, If we were to add electric the price would be a lot higher to cover our electricity charges. However my partner did offer for you to store your fridge items in our fridge if you needed.
I am really sad that you felt we were not friendly... both me and my partner work 40 plus hours in our own jobs as well as running the campsite and we always try to be friendly to our guests despite that.
i appreciate your concerns and how you felt your experience was, but we do work so hard to make the best stay possible for people, and as we are such a small business we would really have appreciated if you came and shared your concerns to us and we would have done our very best to help you.

We are sorry you would not return again, but wish you the very best.

thanks,
alice.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked - Very friendly and helpful host
- Gorgeous house and garden
- Quiet and peaceful atmosphere
- Good facilities with an indoor bathroom
- Supply of things you might forget/run out of
- Lots of animals (peacocks, silly chickens, a cat) that roam the house
- Lovely area with lots of walks and a good beach nearby
- We didn’t stay in the glamping tent but we peeked inside an empty one and it was gorgeous!

Disliked A little bit spidery inside the bathrooms!
Also your car is not next to your tent which is not a big deal but just keep in mind when packing.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are glad you had such a lovely stay with us and enjoyed yourselves,

Yes our toilets do get spidery quite quickly, which i do try to keep on top of as much as possible. But i will definitely try to clear them as much as possible for the foreseeable.

We are so glad you would stay again and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Alice.

Liked The owners were very helpful, on call to answer any questions and give advice where needed. The camping field was very pretty and well kept and not at all crowded. The owners told us they only ever allow 5 tents in the field at a time. Really nice pub, the Wesyleigh within 20 minute walk.

Local attractions

Between the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Hartland Heritage Coast, this is true walking country. From Instow (10 minutes' drive) you can join the Tarka Trail, a wildlife-packed route inspired by the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's novel. Follow it to Westward Ho! (15 minutes from the site) and cool off in the sea; the farm owners also suggest surfers head here, instead of busier beaches further north. You can take lessons in the art of not falling off various watercraft at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (15 minutes), while for further thrills, kayaking, laser tag and assault courses are also on the menu. For gentler times on water, head to the old riverside town of Appledore (15 minutes) for a boat cruise. If you fancy frying a fish over that firepit you can choose between the Torridge and Taw rivers as well as the big briny. Bideford is a popular launch point for sea fishing and for trips to Lundy Island: this wild outcrop in the Atlantic attracts all kinds of adventurers from seal spotters to wreck divers and has spectacular sunsets to round it all off.
